Penance was formed in 2006 by twin band members John and Steven Christian. The very first lineup was John-drums, Steven- guitar, Ryan Johnston- Guitar, Alec Falsone- bass and Nick Smith- Vocals. Penance played old- school style metal and thrash. This original lineup played one show at a middle- school talent show. After this Ryan left the band to be replaced by Matt Martinez on guitar. Penance started practicing their asses off writing and playing a bunch of songs. Later, Alec left the band and Ryan rejoined Penance on bass. They managed to get a show at the Loudoun Youth fest in May 2007. Things weren't working out with Nick, and he quit the band. Patrick Turner joined on vocals with 2 days to practice before the show. After this, Penance played a few backyard shows. During the summer of 2007, Penance decided to start from scratch with this new lineup. They got rid of all of their old songs, and wrote heavier material. They were accepted into the Loudoun All-Star Battle of the Bands on November 3rd, and came in 4th place out of 8 bands. Things started to get complicated with Ryan, so Penance has a new temporary bassist (Reilly Jones) until we can find a new one. Now, Penance is writing and recording new material, and booking more shows. Penance has had the same goal since day one: to create heavy music that hasnt already been beaten to death by a million other bands, and to show that metal can be brutal and melodic at the same time. We feel that we are well on our way to achieving this goal.
