I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what way I wanted to go about it. That's a good thing for music fans about to get a taste of Penelope Lawson. Having started out singing at horse shows (where she was a competing equestrian), then at Ranger games, it wasnt long before she set out to make her mark on the music industry. It's taken a few years and numerous life experiences, but Lawson recently released her debut album Determined, and she is currently in the studio recording a yet untitled new album with her band. "It traces different stories as opposed to one persons and not just my story." And that means you can expect Penelope to deliver an album that is both inspirational and raw. From dark piano driven tracks to more rock based productions, Penelope's sound spans from Fiona Apple to Blondie, Natalie Imbruglia to Kate Bush. Don't let these modern names fool you though; Penelope is a trained musician having a classical background in both voice and piano. That is really what allowed me to find myself, but I'm still growing a lot as a writer. She says writing all of her own material is key because it allows a certain control. "You can be what you want to be rather than other people dictating to you, 'oh, shes going to be pop, rock' and trying to pigeon hole you. I dont write from a specific person. I draw from different experiences, from different people." Now Penelope looks forward to getting her material out there and performing for the public. In the past she has performed at New York City hotspots like Crash Mansion, the Cutting Room, CBGB, the Bitter End, the Lion's Den, and Fez, as well as an event sponsored by Z100 FM. Neonnyc.com says, "[d]espite having a classical music background, Penelope Lawson still knows how to belt out a rock song. [And] it looks like her real style comes out there when shes out there doin it live.As we've always said, you cant go wrong hanging out in bars."
