Don't miss Tango with Style and La Sylphide!

Tango With Style

Neenan TBA/Octet for Strings/Five Tangos

May 6-10

Merriam Theater

Audiences will be seduced by the passion of traditional Argentinean tango when married with ballet as Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen finds a place in Pennsylvania Ballet’s repertoire with his 1977 work Five Tangos, driven by a fiery score from the master of tango nuevo Astor Piazzolla.

Robert Weiss’s Octet for Strings uses the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat and intricately woven patterns in an interesting neo-classical work with four principal couples.

Duets, trios and quartets punctuate Choreographer in Residence Matthew Neenan's newest piece for Pennsylvania Ballet. The ballet is set in three movements, including two from Borodin's String Quartet #2 in D Major and other Korsakov's String Quartet in F Major. Principal Dancer Martha Chamberlain will create the costumes for the cast of nearly a dozen.

Individual tickets on sale April 6, 2009.

La Sylphide with Barber Violin Concerto

June 5-13

Academy of Music

With its blend of charm, infatuation, ethereal delights and a dash of comic relief, La Sylphide ushered in the reign of romantic ballets. When a young Scottish farmer abandons his bride-to-be for a beautiful winged creature, he offends not only the wedding party but the witch who heralds his demise. Recognized as the oldest ballet in existence, Bournonville’s ambitious choreography demands prolonged pointe work and exudes the innocence of youth. But for all its technical influence and thematic whimsy, La Sylphide cautions that the grass isn’t always greener.

Bathed in white, two couples take the stage for a brilliant series of pas de deux in the Company premiere of Peter Martins’s Barber Violin Concerto. The piece embodies the lyrical movement of Samuel Barber’s inventive piece that bridges from an opening adagio to its final scherzo, exploring the dichotomy between classical ballet and modern dance in three movements.
