A seldom told story is the one of the sprawling pop scene in Ostersund, a rather isolated town in the north of Sweden. No, we kid you not. The city by the lake has spawned lots of great groups, it's just that no one has ever noticed.
Originally playing in different punk, rock or indie-groups the six soon-to-be creators of the most beautiful northern pop music imaginable met each other in their mid-teens. It was on strangers balconies and in blistering snowstorms on their way to parties they really learned to know one another.
The songs often revisit this time of coming of age, a time of getting to know yourself and the best of friends at the same time. Other recurring subjects of the lyrics is family, guilt and love, lost or longed for.
The tunes are the yellowed pictures of a family photo album, loveletters that never were sent or just damn good popsongs with great vocals, jangly guitars, soaring melodies and catchy choruses.
After releasing four EP:s that displayed a genuine belief in pop-music's ability to move it's listeners Penny Century were signed to Letterbox Records for their debut album called "Between A Hundred Lies", released in august 2007.
Last summer the five-track "Valencia EP" was recorded and will, at the end of mars, be released on I Tunes and Letterbox Records. The songs are also available for free download on Penny Century promotion site
All tough the members of Penny Century are still just in their early twenties they have established themselves as exceptionally gifted songwriters.
A great focus on playing live, has earned them the reputation of being a surprisingly explosive live act.
Songs like these rarely fails in its aim to affect people, at least everybody with blood in their veins.
But most importantly, these are songs that preferably shouldn't be read about, but heard. So, what are you waiting for?

Penny Century hail from Östersund, a town in northern Sweden renowned for, er... not an awful lot, until now. After releasing four Ep:s, Between A Hundred Lies, their debut full length offering, is an exceptional and inspired collection of intelligent and, frankly, mature song writing, delighting with its uplifting melodies and the heavenly voice of Julia Hanberg.
Demonstrating a canny knack for composing songs that combine elements of 60s girl groups and new wave pop (a la Blondie and The Pretenders) such as 'Please Don't Go', they're also smart enough to add effective brass, with an occasional touch of violin and banjo too, that helps propel their bright, infectious sound skywards.
Between A Hundred Lies is a glorious debut from a Swedish band displaying a disproportionate amount of talent for such a young age. Absolute pop perfection.
