Twenty-otwo-year old Penny Hartgerink is a singer/songwriter from Kiama on the NSW South Coast. In February 2008 Penny released her first five-track CD, titled FOUR DAYS. It was produced by rock legend and studio whiz Clive Shakespeare with ace guitarist Jeff Mercer leading some of Sydney's finest players in a joyful collection of east coast Australian pop/folk songs and ballads. Inside four weeks FOUR DAYS had gone to No. 1 on the national independent release charts, and into the ARIA Top 50 physical singles chart.
Recorded at Jim Blackfoot's Newtown studio, the five tracks (featured above) offer a sample of Penny's fine songwriting and vocal skills. Shakespeare and Mercer also enlisted the musicianship of Peter Toohey on electric and upright bass, George Bibicos on piano, organ and accordian and Rob Souter on drums and percussion.
Penny's CD is an Independent release, being distributed by MGM. It is available in music stores and on-line. FOUR DAYS covers a range of styles with the folksy Don't Fool Me and Truth, the harder edge of Please Don't Say to the breeziness of Honest and True and the pure pop of the title track.
Penny is an established live performer on the South Coast, playing a cruisey mix of her original songs and covers of songs by her favourite artists inluding Jewel, Kasey Chambers, Lucinda Williams, Emmy-Lou Harris, The Waifs, Ben Harper, Bob Marley, Michael Franti and Bernard Fanning.
Over the last two years she has supported artists such as Xavier Rudd, The Beautiful Girls, Lior, James Reyne and Mark Seymour when they've played on the South Coast. On 16 March, 2008 she opened the John Butler Trio at the Union of Soul concert at Wollongong Botanic Garden. The lineup included Clare Bowditch, Lior and Gotye.
Penny has been performing since she was six years old. She had solo spots in a number of concerts at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and Opera House throughout her school years, and is a graduate of the NSW Education Department's Talent Development Project. She was a featured artist in the Schools Spectacular and sang the National Anthem at an Australia-New Zealand rugby league test match at age 17.
In 2005 Penny was commissioned to write and record a song for an ABC TV documentary about a teenage girl who died in the 2002 Bali bombings. She performed that song, Chloe - a haunting ballad about a father's grief at the tragic loss of his daughter - at the third anniversary memorial service at Dolphin Point in Sydney.
Penny is excited about the release of FOUR DAYS. "It was great working with Clive, Jeff and the guys," she says. "They are all such experienced musos, and I really enjoyed the whole experience. I love the way the songs turned out so I hope other people do too."
FOUR DAYS is distributed by MGM and can be ordered through your favourite music store. Or you can order it on-line from stockists such as www.redbackmusic.com.au, www.cdonline.com.au or www.sanity.com.au The songs are also available on i-tunes.
