The Living Dead tetralogy by George Romero! Wonderful movies. The Dawn of the Dead remake from 2004 is also a rather good accomplishment. And I should not exclude Equilibrium with Chrisopher Bayle, definitely. Batman Begins is also very, very dark (=positive)

I'd also recommend Penn & Teller's "Bullshit". The British TV series Jonathan Creek. Star Trek TNG. And if they had chosen to make a SERIES out of the LoTR, it would have been so so so much better...imagine, one chapter per episode!!
