People For the American Way's Interests
|
| General | We're interested in a lot of different issues, but to name a few things we work on:
Fighting for equal rights for everybody; preventing any more hard-right justices from joining the Supreme Court; monitoring and exposing the Religious Right's radical agenda; making sure everyone's got free and fair access to the polls on election day.
Read more about our work at www.pfaw.org. | | Music | We've got pretty eclectic tastes, but indie rock is in heavy rotation on our iTunes network here at the office: we love bands like Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Belle & Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, The Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Spoon.
We also love Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Waits. | | Movies | Are you shocked that we like movies with political themes? "Dr. Strangelove," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Dave," "The American President," and "All the President's Men" are all great. | | Television | "The West Wing." Idealism about the positive power of American politics + great writing and acting = love! | | Books | The Constitution (we know, we're hopeless wonks)
Stride Toward Freedom and Why We Can't Wait by Martin Luther King, Jr.
America in the King Years by Taylor Branch
Common Ground by J.A. Lukas
| | Heroes | Anybody who does what they can for progressivism -- by voting, signing a petition, writing a letter to Congress, taking part in a rally -- however they can. |

Right Wing Facebook: Primary Fever Edition
Now that primary season is in full swing, the five frontrunners for the Republican nomination are pandering harder than ever to their buddies on the right wing, hoping to secure endorsements and fundraising dollars. Right-Wing Facebook will give you an inside look at the right-wing universe: who’s friends, who’s enemies, and who’s leaving snarky messages on Rudy Giuliani’s wall about losing to Ron Paul.

Video Project: Tell Your Senators Why They Should Say No to Telecom Immunity
Congress will soon decide whether to grant immunity to telecom companies that may have violated the law by helping the Bush administration carry out its illegal wiretapping program. Don’t let the telecoms – and the White House – escape accountability for violating Americans’ privacy. Submit a video that we will send to your senators telling them in your own words why they should say NO to telecom immunity.

Supreme Court Hears Argument on Indiana's Pernicious - and Pointless - Indiana Voter ID Law
There have been zero cases in Indiana of someone trying to impersonate someone else at the voting booth. Yet Indiana requires its voters to present current, state-issued ID in order to cast a ballot. This puts a big burden on the ability of some groups to exercise their right to vote.

Huckabee's Iowa Win is the Religious Right's Dream Come True
Sure, he gets cool (well: "cool") points for being buddies with Chuck Norris, but make no mistake: Mike Huckabee's an extreme Religious Right candidate.
If there were any doubts that Religious Right voters are still a powerful force in the Republican Party, Huckabee’s huge win in Iowa last Thursday put them to rest. Huckabee’s rise was built on fervent grassroots organizing by Religious Right activists who embraced him as their dream candidate, even as the movement’s national leaders kept their distance while making calculations on electability.

Protestor Challenges Pat Robertson's Extreme-Right-Wing Cred
When you think "Pat Robertson," do you wish "Wow, I wish that guy could be more extreme in his right-wing views?" Nope. But then you're not Randall Terry, a veteran protestor who took to the street a few weeks back to protest Robertson's endorsement of GOP candidate Rudy Giuliani, who showed pro-choice tendencies while governor of NYC. PFAW staffers caught up with Terry and made this video of his exploits.

The Right Wing, Then and Now
Our video guys found a fantastic clip reel in our research vaults featuring prominent right-wingers venting their outrageously reactionary views. People featured in the video include prominent right-wingers like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Phyllis Schlafly.
Just to give you an idea of the kinds of quotable quotes in this video:
"Most women do not wish to be liberated from their essential natures as women."
"We are facing a new type of Gestapo -- a homosexual Gestapo."

Sen. Dodd Follows Through on His Promise and Stops Telecom Immunity!
Sens. Chris Dodd and Russ Feingold led eight others in taking a stand on Monday against the FISA reform bill under consideration, passed by the Intelligence Committee and known as the FISA Amendments Act of 2007 (S.2248). Debate won't begin again until after the Senate returns from recess in January. PFAW strongly opposes granting immunity to telecoms that may have violated the law by cooperating with the White House's illegal wiretapping program. Not only would S. 2248 do this, it would also fail to guarantee individualized warrants -- a crucial protection against government abuse of our due process rights.
Take action by telling your senators to vote "NO" on immunity here:

Due Process on the Line: Tell Your Senator to Vote "No" on Telecom Immunity!
The Senate has begun debating whether to grant immunity to telecommunications companies that may have violated the law by cooperating with the White House's illegal wiretapping program. PFAW strongly opposes the bill under consideration, passed by the Intelligence Committee and known as the FISA Amendments Act of 2007 (S.2248). This version not only contains immunity provisions but also fails to guarantee individualized warrants -- a crucial protection against government abuse of our due process rights.

The Huckabee Surge: Why Religious Right Activists Like Mike
Though he’s often described as a kinder and gentler version of a Religious Right candidate, behind Mike Huckabee’s "nice guy" demeanor is a history of far-right activism. People For the American Way’s latest report on the candidate shows why Huckabee could be the Religious Right’s dream candidate.

Restoring Voting Rights
In most states, if you're convicted of a felony, you lose your right to vote, permanently. Florida governor Charlie Crist recently changed state law, however, so that ex-offenders convicted of non-violent crimes who've paid their debt to society can reclaim their right to vote.
To help people reclaim their rights as citizens, PFAW's sister organization, PFAW Foundation, has started a website, www.restoremyvote.org, that will help these Floridians find out if they're on the list of individuals who've been given clemency. The website also provides information on how to register to vote.
It's a cool project. Check it out:

Hold Josh Bolten and Harriet Miers in Contempt for Ignoring Congressional Subpoenas
The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote tomorrow on whether to enter a contempt motion against White House Chief of Staff and former White House counsel Harriet Miers for ignoring congressional subpoenas. White House officials' decision to blow off Congress's requests for information damages the integrity of the government's checks and balances system.
Tell Congress to call the White House on this abuse of executive power by using our action:

Tell Congress to Do Its Job and Check Executive Abuse of Power
Think that White House officials shouldn't be allowed to ignore congressional subpoenas by hiding behind erroneous claims of executive privilege?
Yeah, we don't think so either. Checks and balances among the branches of government only work if they're actually used in practice.
Ask your representative to support Rep. John Conyers' effort to hold two White House officials ignoring congressional subpoenas -- White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers -- in contempt.
The contempt vote will likely come up in December, and it'll be close.
Please take a few minutes to write your representative to urge him or her to check executive abuse of power and vote YES on contempt.
Find contact info for your representative here -- you can even use their "write your representative" function to get in touch:

Thanks!!
Has Congress Found a Spine?
Some members of Congress are actually pushing back against the White House's use of a shady legal defense -- the "state secrets" doctrine -- to justify its illegal wiretapping program. Has Congress finally found its spine?

Californians: Tell Feinstein Not to Support Telecom Immunity!
Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California has been making a lot of bad calls lately on the Judiciary Committee -- voting for Michael "Waterboarding's not torture!" Mukasey and the anti-LGBT judge Leslie Southwick.
Today Feinstein might vote the wrong way yet again -- to give immunity to telecoms who helped the Bush administration with its illegal warrantless wiretapping program.
If you're a Californian, please call Feinstein now -- this afternoon -- to urge her to vote AGAINST telecom immunity.
The committee is debating the telecom immunity provision RIGHT NOW, so please call as soon as you can.
Here's Feinstein's number: (202) 224-3841
Thanks!!
House Passes Historic Gay Rights Measure
I'm a bit late posting on this but wanted to note in case people hadn't heard already that there was actually some GOOD news for the progressive cause last week. (Yay, finally.) The House voted on Nov. 7 to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which will protect members of the lesbian and gay community from workplace discrimination. The bill's passage is a significant step forward in a 25-year campaign for equality that will continue as advocates work for a bill that includes protections for transgender Americans.

Virginia Voters to Politicos: Hate-Mongering Won't Work on Us
I'm proud today to have grown up in the great commonwealth of Virginia because Virginia voters showed yesterday that they won't support politicians who use hate-mongering against immigrants as a campaign tactic.
Yay, VA.

PFAW Voices Opposition to Mukasey's Nomination
Because he refuses to say waterboarding is torture, has failed to make firm commitments to improving civil rights enforcement, and generally shown a lack of independence from the White House, PFAW has released a statement today of opposition to Michael Mukasey's nomination for attorney general. Read more about why here:
http://www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/default.aspx?oid=24861
Constitutional rights advocates have called on attorney general nominee Judge Michael B. Mukasey to state without qualification that waterboarding is illegal. Disturbingly, Mukasey has thus far refused to say that the practice is torture. The Senate must press Mukasey to clarify his views on this crucial human rights question.
Read the questions PFAW thinks he's got to answer before the Senate votes on his confirmation:

Who's Scarier Than Rush Limbaugh?
Or Pat Robertson, or Ann Coulter? The right wing is pretty damn frightening. That's why we've created a Right-Wing Costume Kit complete with masks of five right-wingers that you can download and print out.
We've also included some pretty terrifying (and 100% real!) right-winger quotes you can use as talking points for when you're in character, as well as suggestions for additional costume accessories.
Check it out at http://www.pfaw.org/go/RightWingCostumeKit.
