DOOM GARDEN episode one: Entropy and the Three Bears. by Pereid
Goldie was professional thief. She was coming home through the forest after a heist involving rubies when she became thirsty. She let herself into the first unoccupied house she found. Taking a quick survey of what was available to drink and how to drink it, she counted three clean glasses, a pitcher of lemonade, and a tray of ice.
She filled the first glass with ice and poured the lemonade over it. She took a sip and screeched as the cold liquid stung her sensitive teeth. In the second glass she poured a glass of lemonade, wisely putting no ice in it to avoid the pain. She took a sip and her face scrunched up to the bitterness of the lemons. Goldie sat down and did an advanced equation to figure out the perfect ice to lemonade ratio to have a delightful cup that was neither too cold nor too bitter.
In went the ice and in went the lemonade and Goldie took a sip of ecstasy. Goldie immediately began plotting out how to market this perfect blend. She imagined a vast empire of lemonade franchises. The employees would each wear uncomfortable bear suits. She would buy a lemon orchard and the machines that make the ice so she would not have to outsource. Children around the world would dance in the streets, delighted with the perfect lemonade.
She took another sip of the drink only to have her heart broken. The taste had dulled. Staring deeply into the cup she noticed the ice was minutely smaller.
Goldie's thoughts began to spin out of control. The chair she was sitting on was decomposing too. All the petrol in the world was being burned up, the sun was dying, and the universe slowly using all the potential energy. Goldie was just a doomed ice cube in the lemonade of life. Perhaps this was the bear's plan after all, to drive young kleptos into despair. Ah, but the bears were arrogant in their plan, for they neglected the possibility of robots assisting Goldie.
There was a book on designing robots sitting on a pile of things to read at home, an incidental gift from an ex-lover. She figured that after reading the book she could make a robot that maintained the lemonade at a perfect temperature.
She realized that was called a refrigerator. Once Goldie was told that if she ever needed to warm up her house that she could open the refrigerator doors and let the engine overwork itself increasing the temperature of the house instead of chilling it. Her lemonade would be perfect but at what cost? Was making the rest of the world warmer worth keeping the lemonade cool?
Maybe robots were not the answer. Her thoughts turned darker as she considered consorting with demons to help her perfect lemonade. A demon would not waste energy maintaining the balance in the drink. This would only work at a seemingly impossible temperature of absolute zero. There would be such a scandal!
Even if the demon did not take energy to keep the ice and lemonade separate, it would take too much energy to keep track of all the individual particles and keep them organized. She could not win.
Everything seemed completely absurd, and the lemonade business was growing very troublesome. She should have been a mechanic she thought, thinking that the grease and sweat would keep her mind off junior entrepreneurship. Maybe she should be happy she even existed. This planet was neither too hot nor too cold for life to exist. She looked outside to count her lucky stars, and as it was day time, she counted only one.
The three bears came home completely famished. They were shocked by the girl with the glazed look in their kitchen. They slowly approached her, wondering if she was edible. The robot noticed and warned Goldie. The demon tossed the left over lemonade across the room to allow enough time for Goldie to slip into the shadows.
Goldie and her robot and demon friends safely evaded the three bears to bend the laws of the universe another day.
