Many Names's Interests
|
| General | Movies. comic books. travel. foreign languages. alternate fuels. anime. sci-fi. international affairs. Chinese affairs. Chinese language. Electrical engineering. Intelligent conversation. Eye candy. Roadtrips. Conspiracy theories (our generation's equivalent to old-time campfire stories, that). Rants. Project: Orion. Project: Tobacco. Operation: Albatross. Philosophical discussions. Outer Space. The May-Day Mystery. | | Music | Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Brother. My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. Johnny Cash. Pretty much anything you're likely to hear on the Thistle and Shamrock. Soundtracks (I love soundtracks). The Flaming Lips. Placebo. Jamelia. Busta Rhymes. Dvorak. Ludwig Van. Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The Sounds of Home. Highland Rovers. Flogging Molly. Dropkick Murphys. Wagner. The Prodigy. Benny Benassi (but only once in a while). Polysics! Allison Krauss. Moxy Fruvous, every once in a while. Muse. Johnathan Coulton. Nice Peter. George Winston (good piano music, that). | | Movies | Brick. Reefer Madness: The Musical. Spiderman 1 and 2 (but not 3, except for the first few scenes with the Sandman). X-men 1 and 2 (not 3). Snakes on a Plane. Fearless (propoganda film that it was, it was still pretty fun). Shortbus. Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Fight Club (I just don't want to see it, again, now that we're all done quoting it day in and day out). Donnie Darko. Requiem for a Dream. Real Genius. Little Miss Sunshine. The Prestige. 300. Death of a President (suprisingly well-done, this one. Can't wait to see what that shop gets up to, next). V for Vendetta. The Last Samurai (or, as Jordan put it, "The Last Samurai and His White Friend"; that said, it's actually a very good movie). Beautiful Boxer. Casshern. Cro-Martie High School: The Movie. Deathwatch. Infernal Affairs. Cro-Martie High School (live-action). Star Wars (first trilogy). Hot Fuzz (something about gun fights involving elderly Brits just delights me). Transformers (the new movie. The old one's good, too, but I can't watch it without getting all misty-eyed). Mulberry St. 30 Days of Night. | | Television | Deadwood (still mad at HBO for not renewing this one *or* Carnivale). Carnivale. Alias. Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Lost. The Amazing Screw-on Head. Dane Cook's Tourgasm. Heroes. Studio 60. The Daily Show. The Colbert Report. Drawn Together (the censored version, because it's funnier when you hear the bleeps). Jericho. Battlestar Galactica (although Adama the Younger is, in my opinion, a whiny bitch). The Reduced Shakespeare Company's various endeavors (ok, not technically television, but there's no "theatre" heading, here). Stand-up comedy. Gantz. Serial Experiments: Lain (personal favorite). Cowboy Bebop. Star Trek: DS9 and Next Gen. Firefly. Metalpocalypse. The Dresden Files, even if it was a bit formulaic. | | Books | The Ethical Slut. The Hotel New Hampshire. House of Leaves. The Dark Tower series. The Coming Conflict With China. China, Inc. Time Enough For Love. Watchmen. Almost anything by Ellis, Spider Robinson, or Heinlein. American Gods. The Alchemist. Choke. Survivor. Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Physics textbooks. Differential Equations textbooks. Calculus textbooks. Chinese textbooks. Science and Health. The Long March (Thanks, Liz!). 50 Facts That Should Change The World. The Invisibles. Strangers in Paradise. The Secret History of the American Empire. Lone Survivor. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove (a surprisingly tame book, that). | | Heroes | You know, I was always at a loss when asked to name heroes, in the past. Dr. John Kiser (best English teacher ever). Jimmy Locke (showed me you're never too old to go back, get your degree, and go on to amazing things). Jack Bristow. Batman. Wang Longfei, my old contact teacher, because he's awesome. The Brothers Grinn, because they seem to have more fun than almost anyone else. J. J. Abrams, or whoever's actually writing his stuff. Jet Li (especially after his last movie, although that movie he did with DMX is still rather dumb). Charlie Croker. Jason Statham ("Handsome Rob"). Robert Hawkins. Elijah Snow. Jamie Kennedy (because he has more fun than most and doesn't seem to mind being ridiculous). Richard Metzger. |

Many Names's Blurbs |
About me:
(Raidho, Tiwaz, Laguz.) I'm looking to go back to school, as I've decided I want to be a world-traveler (going to China was one of the best things I did, and it's made me want to see for myself what the rest of the globe is like), a polyglot, an engineer and, eventually, a teacher, as well. This is going to be the work of many years, but I finally got started on it. Oh, and I love ice cream. Also, I am inept at lip-synching.
update: Now in the Navy, second phase of nuclear power training, and soon to be working on nuclear submarines. Whee!
------------
There should be a section for one's favorite quotes, in my opinion. As there is no pre-existing one, I'm making my own.
Quotes:
"Allmächtiger Gott, Lösche Aus"
--one of the things AGLA stands for.***
"Never Despair. Never surrender."
--Rorschach, "Watchmen"***
"There is always a 'why'."
--Kelli I.***
"Be a philosopher; but amid all your philosophy, be still a man."
- David Hume***
"Don't be a jerk."
--I first encountered this one on the Straight Dope Message Board, but it seems to be the core precept of a great many online communities.***
"Anyone who makes up their mind before they hear the fuckin' issue is a fuckin' fool.... Listen, let it swirl around your head, *then* form your opinion! No normal, decent person is *one* *thing*."
--Chris Rock

Who I'd like to meet:
Spider Robinson. Stan Lee. Terry Moore. Henry Rollins. the director of "Brick". Robert Heinlein. Busta Rhymes. Lin Yongsan. Jet Li. Fred Durst (but only to deliver a message). The guy who played the main character in Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior. J. J. Abrams (in part to see if he really *is* illiterate). Thora Birch. Alan Moore. Warren Ellis. Frank Miller. Grant Morrisson. Johnathan Coulton. Spider Robinson. Christopher Lloyd. Naomi Wolf. Aaron McGruder.
