Rhyming since the early age of 12, Perion Smith is an independent Hip Hop artist who has grown to master his craft through dedication and perseverance. Peri now has a near 10-year run in and around the business of music but he concedes, “I’m glad I didn’t get on when I was young because I don’t think I was really ready back then. But now I got it! I got it with the music and my business is tight.”
Now, not only does he rhyme with the same vigoroso of his youth, but he has also matured into a seasoned artist who knows how to make songs, not just music. He is also a gifted producer and even a competent audio engineer. He produced and self-engineered the lion’s share of his debut album, entitled: “The Long Awaited Debut Album by Perion Smith”.
Having performed from Toronto to Maine and all over the Tri-State area, particularly in his youth, over the years Peri created a modest buzz in the underground and has always been asked about the release date of his material. “That’s why I named my album that…because that’s what it is!” Perion’s album is truly long awaited, especially in his neighborhood of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn where he has honed his skills and proudly represents.
His pride in being born and raised in Brooklyn can be heard in Courtesy of the ‘Brook one of the sure shots from his album. This track is a dedication and testimony to the role that Brooklyn played in influencing the sound and direction of Hip Hop around the world. This song is also Perion’s oath of helping to add to this fact.
When asked to describe his sound and style, Smith simply says, “it’s neo-vintage…the sound and the personality. It’s the new with the old. It’s the evolution of the music”. His neo-vintage sound is what will make him one of the few artists who appeal to the generation of Hip Hop lovers who are no longer catered to as well as to those who the industry currently markets.
The goal of Smith is best described by one of his lyrics, from his banger, Pay Homage; “Perion Smith, you can bank on my pen / the whole game ‘gon change thanks to him.” As these lyrics assert, Peri’s goal, while maintaining independent status, is to acquire distribution so that he can create a profitable scenario for those involved with his career. Additionally, his goal includes doing his part to “change the game” to where Hip Hop lover’s on both ends of the spectrum can finally have a common artist who we haven’t seen since the likes of two other Bed-Stuy representatives, Jay-Z and Biggie.
