Pernille Gunvad:



Raised in a red terraced house in Eastern Denmark, Pernille Gunvad grew up with strong roots in traditional Danish culture. Being surrounded by music, classical theatre and poetry throughout childhood, she developed a keen interest in music at an early age; throughout her teens she sang in various bands, but it wasn't until 1995, while taking classical vocal training at a local music school, that Gunvad found her calling as a songwriter. Just a few years later she was accepted to the cutting edge Danish music college, Byhjskolen.

Upon graduating Gunvad relocated to Copenhagen, where she started working with musician and producer Morten Buchholst. Together they put together her first demo, which quickly found its way into the hands of an international major label (Virgin Rec.). Unable to come to an agreement regarding the finer points of the contract, Pernille moved to Denmark's second larget city, Aarhus, where she and her band, EDB, were awarded 2nd place at a local talent competition. This was immediately followed by a performance at the SPOT festival, Denmark's largest festival of indie artists and bands.

After still more overtures from the majors, Pernille decided to put out her debut album, Fire, on her own label, GoGreatGuns Records. Recorded in Copenhagen with her good friend Julian Falck (Mofus), the album is an updated interpretation of the singer/songwriter tradition, wrapping acoustic guitars and piano around electronic beats and textures; Fire combines the off kilter musicianship of Canadian cellist Jorane or Stina Nordenstam with the vocal style of Amy Lee crossed with Mary Margaret O'Hara. Thematically, Fire focuses on themes such as dominance, feebleness, running from life and being happily lost in another person.

So far Fire has received positive reviews in Pernille's native Denmark, being called one of the year's most interesting releases in Skive Folkeblad, and almost unanimously cited by all as the start of a promising musical career. It has enabled her to open with such well-known artist as Heather Nova (US), Scandinavian acts as Swan Lee and 5 time Danish Music Award nominee Hush.

Pernille has just been signed to Aporia Record in Canada under the name "PERNILLE" where her debutalbum "Fire" is beeing released in all of Canada, by Canadas leading distribution "Outside Music".

She is currently recording a follow-up album and will be returning to North America this year to showcase her evolving repertoire and the songs off Fire.
