This is the myspace page of PETE JORDAN, DJ, producer and creator of the reverred club brand Spectrum and Sound of Spectrum records.
Biography - Spring 2009
Starting 2009 the way you started 2008 might mislead people to believe that not much has happened during those 12 months. Seeing in the New Year in the main arena of a buzzing and full capacity Custard Factory in Birmingham, isn’t a bad way to start the year for any self respecting DJ. Make no mistake though; 2008 will go down as a pivotal year in the career of Pete Jordan.
Already well know as the promoter and resident of revered, award-winning club brand Spectrum, 2008 was the year in which Pete finally stepped away from the stigma of resident/promoter and forged his reputation as a DJ with real superstar credentials. Each time the crowd got bigger, and the occasion more grand, it has been a revelation to see the blossoming of one of the most versatile and impressive DJs in the UK at the moment.
It is fair to say many performers would have crumbled at the mere thought of a 90 minute set turning into a 4 hour marathon on a normal night, let alone the main arena on NYE at a 2500 full capacity event. It was this exact scenario that Pete faced when bad weather prevented the appearance of headliners 2Many DJs, and delayed the arrival of Simian Mobile Disco. Four hours of scintillating energy packed music ensued, with the arena struggling to cope with the numbers who quickly forgot about the non-arrival of the headlining act. There was a new star of the show!
Appreciation for his talents on the decks, defined by his profoundly diverse and adventurous musical vision, have been a common feature since the start of the Spectrum club night in 2001. Since its early days at the legendary Bomb venue in Nottingham, his own brand of entertainment has built a loyal following. As the night branched out to top venues and festivals across the UK the appreciation from clubbers and promoters alike grew exponentially. Appearances at Global Gathering, tour dates supporting the The Prodigy and countless other high profile appearances across the UK's best clubs in 2008, have contributed to this, as has the success of the Spectrum brand, now considered by many to be one of the elite nights in the UK.
Overseas performances in Hungary, Russia, Denmark, Holland, Norway, Finland, Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia plus two tours of Australia have also been negotiated with similar success. It seems Pete’s musical savoir-faire and understanding of how to rock a crowd is applicable wherever he performs.
His early affiliation with the developing UK breakbeat scene of the early 2000’s brought a number of accolades, Spectrum gaining no less than four Best Event awards at the International Breakbeat Awards, and even a fourth place in the Best DJ category in 2006 alongside the likes of Stanton Warriors and Krafty Kuts. However, Pete’s own musical direction changed dramatically along with Spectrum’s. He describes his DJ style as ‘genre-less, taking the best music new and old, and applying it to the situation’. His New Year’s Eve 2008 set attested to this with everything from house, electro, breaks, dub step, techno, drum and bass, original funk, indie, progressive and even a bit of Joy Division thrown in for good order. Make no mistake though, this is not eclectic genre-mashing for the sake of being varied and different, Pete’s strength lies in his ability to coherently fuse together the music perfectly for the crowd. He continues, ‘presenting music from as wider source as possible, and delivering it in such a way that everybody understands is important to me. It’s underground in some respects, but the mission always is to get every last person in the venue on the dance floor and really think I have a great formula for doing this’. Pete and Spectrum have managed the near impossible task of taking the non-commercial end of dance music to a mass audience.
In May 2009, International DJ Magazine credited Pete with being a major player in the emerging Warehouse sound, and invited him to mix the cover mount CD for the June issue. The mix includes tracks from the likes of Deadmau5, Stanton Warriors, Simian Mobile Disco, Tiga, Buraka Som Sistema, Skream etc, and forges the array of diverse sounds into a Warehouse styled mix.
Just a small list of acts who Pete played with in the last year includes Deadmau5, Pendulum, Quantic, Crazy P, The Prodigy, Dizzee Rascal, Switch, Rusko, James Lavelle, DJ Format, Angello and Ingrosso, Stanton Warriors, Scratch Perverts, Audio Bullys, Friendly Fires, Rye Rye, Benga, Mylo, Kissy Sell Out, Does it Offend You, Yeah?, Groove Armada, Felix Da Housecat, Annie Mac, Flying Lotus, Simian Mobile Disco, Norman Jay, Bonobo, Zinc and Sub Focus. It’s hard to imagine many DJs playing with such a wide variety of acts in a whole career, let alone a number of months. ‘Being challenged to adapt and dig deep is one of the most rewarded parts of DJing, it keeps you constantly looking for new music and discovering new sounds.‘
Beyond the turntables, Pete continues to steer the Spectrum brand, which currently sees regular nights in Birmingham (Custard Factory and Godskitchen), London (matter), Nottingham (Gatecrasher and Stealth), Leamington Spa (Smack) as well as the numerous club and festival dates across the UK and Europe. Other projects include the Sound of Spectrum record label, music reviews for iDJ Magazine, Spectrum’s own music venue ‘Brownes’ in Nottingham and a whole other list of club nights and events too numerous to mention. Pete has also been working on a number of studio collaborations, which will see the light of day later in 2009.
In essence, it really still is (and always was) about getting in front of the crowd and performing. Averaging around 140 gigs a year for the past three years, Pete is in constant demand, and if you are one of the tens of thousands of people who saw him perform in 2008, you’ll understand why! A jack of all trades maybe, but a true master of the big occasion!
What they say about Pete:
