Tenor saxophone player and composer based in the UK into hardbop, latin jazz and contemporary jazz. Gigging regularly in duo, trio, quartet and quintet line ups - everything from jazz festivals to pubs to wine bars to weddings.
Learned to play in 1980's with Kathy Stobart, Eddy Harvey and Tim Whitehead and played on the London Jazz scene before a spell with innovative Welsh band Plankton and then a move to Devon in 2001. Awarded an Artsmatrix mentoring grant in 2005 to study jazz composition with Iain Ballamy and have performed with him on several occasions.
My bands have played at a number of UK jazz festivals including Teignmouth, Bude, Cheltenham, Exeter Vibraphonic, Pontypool, Hayne Barton, and North Devon Festival. My bands have supported Polar Bear and Kyle Eastwood. Presently writing, performing and recording my contemporary jazz pieces with the PETE CANTER QUARTET and Pete Canter's OCTOBER QUINTET. Have recorded several albums, most recently my compilation CD "So Far". A new CD of my original pieces recorded with a quartet featuring top UK pianist Jim Blomfield on piano is in production.
Hope you enjoy my recording of Son of Red Blues written by UK jazz pianist Mike Taylor. The band is Dhevdhas Nair on piano, Mark Heyward on drums and Riaan Vosloo on double bass along with myself on tenor sax. Slick and Down from the Trees are my own tunes played by the same combo. Little Sunflower by Hubbard is played by Jim Blomfield (piano) and Wayne Elliot (bass). Tracks from the new album to be loaded soon.
Details of all my gigs are on my website at www.petecanter.com where you will also find more short mp3 clips of my duo, trio and quartet. Do check them out.
Hi Pete, Very much enjoyed the tracks here and look forward to seeing you play soon. Thanks, too, for inviting me to your friends space. Best wishes Nick
Thanks for listening.. its always fun when people can respect a genre different from their own... there's good and bad music no matter what genre, race, face, or drugs. marion dean
