DJ Peter Abrahams
Peter A has been hitting the decks since the dawn of house. Starting over 15years ago, when he was still a schoolboy at Livingstone high, his flirtation with the beats would soon turn into an obsession and finally a brilliant career. A winding career that would take him through hip hop (Peter was a pretty hot rapper in his time), Radio Jock (Bush Radio) and mobile Disco's, until finally finding his true vocation in the deep sexy beats of house.
Sandwiched between his first residency in 1994 at the now infamous Club Nexus and the present day, Peter's DJ CV reads like a history of the Cape Town Club scene. Power Station, Dee-lite, G-Spot, Fresh, The Funktion, Zone, The Boiler Room, Spyce, Galaxy, Vibe, Rhythm Divine, More, Loft, Quench, Heat, Fuse, Sutra, Fez, All bar none, Chilli and lime, Opium, purgatory, Rhodes house, Mink, Black sheep. Obsessions, Angels, Piano lounge - the list goes on and on. If a club was heaving anywhere in the past12 years chances were that it was Peter who was weaving his unbelievable magic behind the decks.
More than a club DJ, Peter was a mainstay of the Festivals of the past, if you were at any of those early raves - Mother, Pharcyde, Rise Up, then Peter was definitely one of the Pied pipers leading you to a hedonistic Hamlin.He has shared billing with all the greats that have visited the country Carl Cox, Deep Dish, Armand Van Helden, Little Louis Vega, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, and Marshall Jefferson amongst others.
Continually in demand all over the country, he is increasingly being booked all over South Africa and abroad. He was a regular on both the Essential mix and Red Bull tours. Producer (Burning Funk on Platform records), Radio show host (Mon 6-9 on Mutha fm),
his CV goes on and on.
But there are 2 things that Peter is especially renowned for. Firstly his ability to give something back to the scene, for years he has run a program teaching youngsters how to mix and he was a co-founder of the celebrated Keep It Real parties". Parties held anywhere from church halls and social clubs which gave the Cape Town scene back its underground when the clubs all went mainstream.
Secondly its Peter's irrepressible energy, technical skills and crowd
mastery that never fails to turn an ordinary club night into an unforgettable occasion.
At present Peter Abrahams is resident at Barmooda on Fridays and also guests every two weeks at 169 on Long. Monthly he has a residence with Vinny Da Vincy for Deep Soul Sessions and maintains a forth nightly residence at Opium.
