Peter Butler is a purveyor of great songs accompanied by some excellent guitar playing. He spent his early years sitting at the feet of such guitar luminaries as John James, Bert Jansch, John Martyn and the like and learned to play finger picking guitar to a standard that you rarely hear these days. His repertoire ranges from ragtime to classical, from traditional to modern. An evening with Peter Butler consists of some outstanding songs, interspersed with the occasional finger-breaking instrumental linked with a relaxed but dry sense of humour.

The songs
Santa Cruz is a David Qualey composition which was shown to me many years ago by John James.
The Mermaid and the Seagull is an early Ralph McTell composition.
Lady Nothynge is a well known John Renbourne piece and follows a short David Qualey tune - Just a Moment
Silver Coin comes from the pen of Terry Hiscock who used to play with Hunter Muskett in the early '70's.
One Long Happy Night is a cracking song from John James based on a short story by Dylan Thomas.
Grace and beauty is an old ragtime piano piece composed by James Scott around 1918.
The Swimming Song is by Loudon Wainwright III and Nic Jones turned it into a chorus song.
The guitars: A 1978 Fylde Oberon and a 2009 Fylde Custom Oberon.
Thanks to Garry Hadfield of Asgardphotos for the 'live' image.
