World Flute Specialist, Recording Artist, Educator, and Producer A Grammy Award nominee and three-time Native American Music Award nominee, Peter Phippen is a nationally and internationally respected world flute specialist, recording artist, scholar, educator, and producer. In his approach to world flute performance, he is an experiential, natural folk musician with a penchant for creative and artistic musical improvisation. Peter is a frequent performer and lecturer at universities, public/private elementary and secondary schools, museums, festivals, conferences, and conventions throughout the United States, as well as abroad. Through diligent, methodological research concerning the performance technique, history, and evolution of his vast collection of antique and contemporary anthropological aerophones, Peter has created an exceptional presentation and performance program, both of which are educational and entertaining - an enchanting mix of the very old and the very new in music. Peter offers a captivating collage of sound images, covering the folklore and history of flutes from around the world and throughout time. Concert performances of note include: Zion Canyon Flute Festival, Springdale, Utah; Hood River, Oregon; the historic Chautauqua Institution in New York State; Sunwatch Flute Festival at the Sunwatch Village/Archaeological Park in Dayton, Ohio; Evjue Commons, Olbrich Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Elizabeth Willet Musser New Music Series, Landmark Center, St. Paul, Minnesota; Northwestern University Concert Series, Evanston, Illinois; Potomac Flute Festival, Gaithersburg, Maryland; Radio Live Concerts, Pensacola, Florida; Norwood Village Green Concert Series, Norwood, New York; and Overture Center for the Arts, Madison, Wisconsin. Peter has had four CDs released by Canyon Records of Phoenix, Arizona. His debut recording, Book of Dreams, charted at #17 in the New Age Voice. Peter's Echoes of the Past was a finalist in the 2000 Crossroads Music Awards. Night Song was a 2003 Native American Music Awards nominee in the Native Heart category. Released in October 2006, Shadows of Dawn was featured for five months in the top twenty-five on Public Radio International's syndicated program ECHOES, peaking at #8. Peter's Summerland CD received a 2011 Native American Music Award nomination. He has also played antique and contemporary bamboo flutes on three releases for Lifescapes, as well as five solo recordings with Promotion Music Records. Peter has produced and played on many charting and award-nominated recordings. Most recent examples include his total CD performance on and production of Woodnotes Wyld: Historic Flute Sounds from the Dr. Richard W. Payne Collection for which he received a 2010 Grammy Awards nomination, an Indian Summer Music Awards nomination, and a Native American Music Awards nomination; Clear Water Reflections which received a Native American Music Awards nomination, a ZMR Music Awards nomination, and a 2009 North American Indigenous Image Award; Kevin Locke's Preserving the Heritage … Insights and Songs from Kevin Locke; performed on and co-produced Ann Licater's Doorway to a Dream which placed on Amazon's Best Music of 2010: Top Ten New Age Albums and received a 2010 ZMR Music Award; Memory of Time by Jan Seiden which charted at #19 in the May 2008 New Age Reporter; Michael Bucher's CD, Seven, which received two nominations for the 2007 Native American Music Awards and two nominations for the 2007 Indian Summer Music Awards in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Michael Bucher's CD, Believe, which won a 2010 Native American Music Award in the Best Folk Recording category. Released in September 2011 by Wisconsin-based Promotion Music Records, Peter's newest recording, Lavender Calm, is a collaborative endeavor with Dr. Arja Kastinen (Finland). The CD ranked sixth on Karen Pauley's "Delightful Dozen Branches 2011" list on the Nordic Roots and Branches program on KSER anchored in Washington State. Lavender Calm also received airtime on Night Tides with Renée Blanche on KCUR in Kansas City, as well as substantial airtime on Finnish radio. The album has received a five-star review in Muzik Reviews by staff writer Dana Wright and a glowing review by Gerry Henkel in New World Finn (Fall 2011). Peter's recordings have been aired on radio and television worldwide. His music can be heard on television programs for Animal Planet, The Discovery Channel, Music Television (MTV), and The Learning Channel, to name just a few. He has received international airplay in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Germany, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, Panama, the Slovak Republic, and the United Kingdom.
