Singer/Songwriter, Peter Sando emerged in the late 60's from the band Gandalf, formerly the Rahgoos prior to the LP release, appearing at various New York clubs such as "The Phone Booth", Scott Muni's "Rolling Stone", "The Electric Circus", Murray the K's "World", and the legendary "Night Owl Cafe" in Greenwich Village. It was there that he met songwriters Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon ("Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be With Me") who brought the band to the attention of record producers Koppelman & Rubin. K&R signed the band and immediately started work on the GANDALF album which was released on the Capitol label in 1969, with two songs penned by Peter. "Can You Travel in the Dark Alone" was a favorite of the late Allison Steele, "The Nightbird", on WNEW-FM New York, who would introduce it with a lengthy dose of her inimitable psychedelic poetry. This highly collectable LP has been bootlegged several times, including a picture disc and a blue vinyl version. In 1991 it was legitimately re-issued on CD by the UK based See For Miles label and most recently in the USA on the highly rated Sundazed. This difinitive release includes an 8 page booklet with new photos and liner notes by Mike Stax (Available at Sundazed.com). Peter also teamed up with Bonner and Gordon to sing lead on two singles including their "Dance at St. Francis" as the Barracuda on RCA which charted in 1968.
Three of Peter's songs, co-written with composer Joe Delia, appear in the 1999 Trimark film "Time Served" with Louise Fletcher and Katherine Oxenberg. "Creatures of Habit", the new CD by Peter Sando is now available on High Point Records. It features JOHN BROWN, about the abolitionist who sparked the Civil War, and DESERT FLOWER, which Peter describes as a "Native American lullaby." These and ten other original songs represent the best of Peter's work to date. (Available at CDBaby.com)
A new CD, GANDALF 2, of outtakes, unreleased demos including the "914 Tracks", and live recordings is now available on Sundazed. Rated FOUR STARS! - "Obscure psych band's ephemera bests their lone album...guitar/vox Peter Sando
adept at crafting ornate, breezy pop gems." - MOJO 5/07
Peter continues to write and perform his songs throughout the New York/New Jersey area folk circuit and recently has sided with fellow fok-rockers Lemon Isis.
Also in the works is a CD of all new original songs including "Afraid of the Dark", "Jaded Love", "Bright Headlights" and the whimsical "Ghost of Robert Erskine". ...Stay tuned!
Peter- Really enjoyed meeting and listening to you last night at the Unplugged show. Thank you so very much for including me and doing all of the hard work - I don't think I thanked you "on mic" but I meant to. Looking forward to doing more music together in the future.
Welcome to The Neil Young Campaign. "What is it" you ask? Well, taking a page from the Obama people, I'm starting a grassroots movement to try to get one of my all-time favorites, Neil Young to do an interview for Neotomic Aliviac. The only way we can do it is if we get your help. There are a couple of ways for you to participate.
1. Most importantly, send an email to Neil's publicist at bobmerlis@bobmerlis.com, and ask him to give Neotomic a chance to do an online interview with Neil. If you do this please put our email address stripeyproductions@yahoo.com, into your letter and a link to our website.
2. Reply to me via myspace, and we will send your comments along.
Peter - it's been a long time since 1967 , and it was good to see you again . Lemon Isis sounded great , though I have to admit that The Rahgoos will ALWAYS be my favorite group . You were always a favourite of mine. Your voice, and style of singing are top notch. You're occasionally fragile vocals were an amazing juxtaposition with the heavier instrumental backing in certain songs on the gandalf album. Now if only I could find Dance of St. Francis / Ladyfingers... the guitar solo in Nature Boy is perfect. Anyway, here's to New England psych artists such as ourselves -Arthur
