Peter Somerville, mainstay of Melbourne’s bluegrass scene and celebrated 5-string maestro, has been playing banjo for close on thirty years. He has toured and recorded with some of Australia’s top musicians including Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers and Renee Geyer, as well as occasionally gracing the small screen with his banjo skills. On tour, he has brought his unique sound to appreciative audiences across Australia, the USA and Singapore, and has a small but devoted cult following in Japan. Currently he plays regular gigs with his own band The Somervilles as well as longtime Melbourne favourites the Pheasant Pluckers. In addition to playing banjo, Peter is an accomplished singer and also plays fiddle, dobro and guitar.
Peter has been teaching banjo for most of his playing career and has developed a proven teaching method that caters to students from absolute beginners to advanced players. He teaches both 3-finger/ bluegrass style and clawhammer/ old-timey banjo. He usually has some good student banjos for sale.

Hi Peter, I had an idea I was going to be playing acoustic in that band as well! I think it all went to seed when Gerry Cox moved to Singapore - he was pencilled in for the McGowan role - something I would have embraced - drinking vodka martinis out of a pint glass and chucking up on stage - I mean anyone could hold down that gig surely? Have a great day mate - cheers Dave
