Here's what I can't stop listening to... "In Rainbows" by Radiohead...which is the perfect title by the way. I just can't get sick of it! It's absolutely flawless. Production is perfect, gorgeous vocals and harmonies, guitars, bass, drums, all amazing. They really outdid themselves on this record!
I just picked up the new Kings of Leon which is great. That voice is just too good to ignore.
When I'm driving I just throw on some Sam Cooke...what more do you need?!
I knew my life had taken a drastic turn when I found myself wanting to live in Justin Timberlake’s “FutureSexLoveSounds”. That album re-introduced to me how much fun music really is. I had lost that feeling a long time ago. Music was the one thing that kept me going, that charged me and that feeling was gone. I’ve got to say that Justin Timberlake got me out of my funk. Who would have thought?
From March of 2002 to July of 2007, I fronted the Boston band Oddway. In that time we released two albums, and recorded two unreleased EP’s. We toured the country opening for such acts as, Kyle Cook of Matchbox Twenty, Vince Welnick of The Grateful Dead, The Samples, members of Strangefolk and Percy Hill and many others. Oddway was the grandprize winner for OurStage in April of 2007 for our song Letter. Our music was featured on demos for FOX, ABC, and VH1. We were finally starting to make a name for ourselves. Then I pulled the plug.
It wasn’t just a band, it was a lifestyle. A lifestyle that had left me with no identity, no sense of who I was as a person, a woman, or an artist. My bottom was hit and it was time to climb out.
I took every bit of knowledge, every fear, and every experience, good and bad and put them into the songs that would make up “Proper Goodbye”, my debut 5 song EP. Every inhibition that had plagued me in Oddway was gone. Writing with producers Sean McLaughlin (Elliot Smith, Maroon 5) and Brad McCarthy (my favorite guitar player ever) was an incredible experience, which I must say is an understatement. They allowed me the freedom and space to let out every emotion and idea that had been building up inside me. But most of all, they believed in my music and the potential of my songs in their most raw form. For that I thank them.
I was fortunate enough to have Mike Levesque (Seven Mary Three, David Bowie) lay down the drum tracks for “Proper”. His power and confidence really set the tone and solid foundation for the record. Brad and Sean took it from there.
There’s a unity and a bond between Brad, Sean and I that is very special and rare and to have that captured on this record is a great feeling and makes me humbled and very proud. That same energy has been taken to the stage as well. I am very fortunate to be able to share the stage with Brad and Sean as well as my other favorite guitar player, Josh Amara, who I stole from Oddway and drummer Gabe Luxton, all of whom make up the current line-up.
Since the release of “Proper Goodbye” in October of 2008, the response has been very rewarding. “All This Time”, was voted number one on OurStage.com in the Alternative Country/ Americana category for September 2008 as well as the top ten for October 2008. OurStage also chose me to be apart of their Boston Showcase Night at The Paradise Rock Club on November 29, 2008.
It’s been a pretty wild journey thus far and with the new year approaching fast, I’d like to keep it going and see how far I can take it.

“Time bends and you blast past planets, stars, solar systems, to arrive in a thrilling, exotic place you’ve never been before. The New Cartographers take you on the same kind of wild ride, exploring brave new musical worlds and bending concepts like looping and melody to their own virtuosic ways. McSurely and drummer Michael Petrucci map out fresh territory, using rock improvisation and textural sonics to define a terrain rich in sweeping beauty, daring in scope, and bristling with creative energy. Recording in Roslindale, Massachusetts’ Big Big Studios with an analog tape machine, vintage plate and spring reverbs, a sampler, and a handful of stomp boxes, they create what McSurely playfully calls “retro sounds of the future.” – Ted Drozdowski (review excerpt)
