Mario Pettenati was born in Parma. He began his musical studies with the violin and the viola; he graduated in Composition in 1996 with the highest honours at the Conservatory "A. Boito "of Parma, with Mario Garuti, and in Instrumentation for Banda always at the same Conservatory, where he also followed courses for film music. In 1990 and 1994 he achieved the Stipenienpreis to participate to the Ferienkurse fur Neue Musik (Darmstadt). He also attended the courses of the Academy "G. Petrassi," organized by the Orchestra "A. Toscanini." Subsequently he completed his studies for Conductor of Orchestra. As a composer he is a finalist and winner of several national and international competitions, including: "Gaudeamus Music Week 1990", in Amsterdam; ed. '90, "Camillo Togni" of Brescia, ed. '90 -'92, "Neopoiesis" in Palermo; "Again Music", in Reggio Emilia, "Biennial young artists of Mediterranean", held in Lisbon; the show "Anima mia voluttuosa and futurista" was selected to represent Italy at VIII edition of the "International Festival of Experimental Theatre in Cairo (Egypt), organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. the show was subsequently replied for the Italian Institute of Culture, in front of various authorities including the Italian Ambassador, Minister of Culture and the Egyptian President; his music has been performed in various events: "Traiettorie", held at the Teatro Regio in Parma; he also composed music for various short-length films, documentaries and advertising jingles. He composed a "Oratorio": "Lectura Dantis" (ed. L’oca del Cairo), played by the Polyphonic Choir "F. Päer " by the Orchestra" A. Toscanini " for the very first time at the Theatre " G. Rossini " in Lugo di Romagna (Ra) in the symphonic season and then for the reopening of Certosa of Parma, within the review " Musica in Galleria "; in S. Remo, for the symphonic season, for the first time, "Iter Dantis" was played (another song which is part of the cycle Dante) (ed. the L’ Oca del Cairo) with the Philharmonic Orchestra of S. Remo; the Teatro Regio of Parma commissioned him a Requiem in memory of Giuseppe Verdi performed for the centenary of his death. As Director of Orchestra and great expert of ancient music and Baroque (he regularly collaborates with the choir Quod libet) he is invited in various national and international exhibitions: Zagreb, Split, Parma, Roma and others. He contributes as Maestro suggeritore with the Teatro Regio of Parma. His music is inserted inside the "Gratis Music Library" by Jerrold W. Lambert and Harry Manfredini.

Ha iniziato gli studi musicali con il violino e la viola, si è diplomato in Composizione nel 1996 con il massimo dei voti e la lode presso il Conservatorio “A. Boito” di Parma, con Mario Garuti, e in Strumentazione per Banda sempre presso lo stesso Conservatorio, dove ha inoltre seguito i corsi di musica da film. Nel 1990 e nel 1994 ottiene lo Stipenienpreis per partecipare ai Ferienkurse fur Neue Musik (Darmstadt).
Segue inoltre i corsi di perfezionamento dell'Accademia "G. Petrassi", organizzati dall'Orchestra "A. Toscanini". Successivamente completa gli studi di Direzione d’Orchestra a Zagabria (Croazia).
In qualità di Compositore è finalista e vincitore di vari Concorsi nazionali ed internazionali, tra le quali:
“Gaudeamus Music Week 1990”, ad Amsterdam; ed. ’90,
“Camillo Togni” di Brescia, ed. ’90 –‘92;
"Neopoiesis" di Palermo;
“Di nuovo Musica”, a Reggio Emilia;
“Biennale giovani artisti dell’Europa Mediterranea”, svoltasi a Lisbona;
Lo spettacolo “Anima mia voluttuosa e futurista” è selezionato per rappresentare l’Italia, all’VIII° edizione del “Festival Internazionale del Teatro Sperimentale del Cairo” (Egitto), organizzato dal Ministero Egiziano della cultura. Successivamente replicato per l’Istituto di cultura Italiano, alla presenza di varie autorità tra cui l’Ambasciatore Italiano, il Ministro della cultura Egiziana ed il Presidente Egiziano;
Sue musiche sono state eseguite in varie manifestazioni: “Traiettorie”, svoltasi al Teatro Regio di Parma;
Compone un’ Oratorio: “Lectura Dantis” (ed. L’oca del Cairo: http://www.ocadelcairo.it/main.php?page=simpleSearch&query=Pettenati), eseguito dal Coro polifonico “F. Päer”, dall’Orchestra “A. Toscanini” e dall’attore Sebastiano Rolli, eseguito in prima assoluta nel Teatro “G. Rossini” a Lugo di Romagna (Ra) nell’ambito della stagione sinfonica e successivamente in occasione della riapertura della Certosa di Parma, all’interno della rassegna “Musica in Galleria”;
A S. Remo viene eseguito all’interno della stagione sinfonica, in prima assoluta, “Iter Dantis” (altro brano che fa parte del ciclo dantesco) (ed. l’Oca del Cairo), con l’Orchestra Filarmonica di S. Remo;
il Teatro Regio di Parma gli commissiona un Requiem in memoria di G. Verdi eseguito in occasione del centenario della morte. In qualità di Direttore d’Orchestra e profondo studioso della musica antica e barocca, (collabora regolarmente con il coro Quod libet) è invitato in varie rassegne nazionali ed internazionali: Zagabria, Spalato, Parma, Roma e altre. Collabora in veste di Maestro suggeritore, con il Teatro Regio di Parma.
Assieme a Leonardo Morini è fondatore dell’Orchestra "Europe Harmony" e dell'Associazione Culturale "NuovAntiqua".
