WHY PIGFARM ????
'Animal Farm' by George Orwell is
fascinating study into what goes wrong when a community gains the freedom it desired, but greed, power and corruption impact negatively. Orwell’s text is called a novella, a short novel, and is subtitled ‘a fairy story’. The idea that a group of animals on a farm might rebel against their owners (Mr and Mrs Jones) and rise up to vanquish their control, of course, at once seems highly improbable and aimed at a target audience of children. Yet, this short book is a serious, powerful study into how society loses its utopian promise, when there is gain or control to be had. Orwell’s interests were in how man reacts to his society, the rules that he lays down, and how the common man is usually constrained and controlled, either knowingly or unknowingly, by those he allows to have power or privilege over him. The animals set up seven commandments which are meant to set them apart from the vices and corruption of mankind, yet, one by one, their leaders (the pigs) take advantage of and abuse their position, until they are barely distinguishable from their original enemies.
