About me:

Writer, editor, curator GARETT STRICKLAND was born and raised in rural Southern Ohio, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. He moved to Portland shortly after graduating high school, and has been there ever since.

In 2006, he founded the monthly PHASE ONE: WORDS + MUSIC series, an interdisciplinary showcase featuring readings, musical performances, and occasional performance art. The series ran for nearly two years, and featured a wide array of talent, including readings from Jonathan Raymond, Stacey Levine, Matthew Stadler, Kevin Sampsell, Monica Drake, Lidia Yuknavitch, Matt Briggs, Trevor Dodge, Corrina Wycoff, and Frayn Masters - as well as performances by Jackie O'Motherfucker, Parenthetical Girls, Arrington de Dionyso, Tara Jane O'Neil, Alela Diane, Dragging An Ox Through Water, Adrian Orange, Laura Gibson, Mattress, Pash(ly), Adam Gnade, Bird Costumes, Modernstate, and Hooliganship.

Most recently, he is co-founder and curator of the UNWIN-DUNRAVEN LITERARY ECCLESIA (www.unwin-dunraven.org), a new literary convergence encompassing a quarterly reading & performance series, finespun publications, special events, and extensive online archives. The Ecclesia places particular emphasis on work and research exploring themes of gnosticism, alchemy, and the occult.

He is currently at work on two story collections, two screenplays, and several chapbooks.

"As the world undergoes daily transformations through the application of technoscience to every aspect of life, science fiction has become an essential mode of imagining the horizons of possibility. However much science fiction texts vary in artistic quality and intellectual sophistication, they share in a mass social energy and a desire to imagine a collective future for the human species and the world. At this moment, a strikingly high proportion of films, commercial art, popular music, video and computer games, and non-genre fiction have become what Csicsery-Ronay calls science fictional, stimulating science-fictional habits of mind.
We no longer treat science fiction as merely a genre-engine producing formulaic effects, but as a mode of awareness, which frames experiences as if they were aspects of science fiction."

Yeah...
The first Christmas that I lived in this godforsaken tardstore, I went to a Christmas Party that was made up mostly of those types of people. At one point we all had to crowd around while they performed for us. I wanted to vomit so bad. I was the only one drinking too.
