Phat Boyz Blue music is a blend of equal portions of Beale Street Blues, Baltimore Boogie, Biloxi Backbeat, and Bayou Bump and Grind spiced up with a taste of Chi-town shuffle, South City Soul, Cactus Crunch, and Sausalito Sizzle served hot and rocking. Like blended bourbon it goes down smooth with a nice kick.
Mr. Z. – guitar, vocals, and talk box – A founding member of Pegasus in the late 1970’s, he left the group prior to its moderate success, for love. He then set the guitar down for over 25 years while creating a family by night and working for a major corporation by day. When health concerns forced his retirement he picked up the guitar again and after short stints with One Night Only, Legally Sound, and Gridley John’s Blues Band, he founded the Phat Boyz in 2004.
Jack Montague-Bass-Jacks formal musical training began with 6 years on trumpet in grade school through high school band and orchestra. He switched to guitar in the 60’s and is self-taught on that instrument learning from records from influences such as the Rolling Stones, Zombies, Kinks, Cream and Hendrix. He was playing in cover bands in So California a few short months after first picking up the instrument. In the early 70’s he dropped out of the band scene to devote time to college, work, marriage, mortgage etc. In mid 80’s he took up playing again for personal enjoyment. After years of noodleing around the house on guitar he started attending local jams to experience playing in a group setting. That is where he started the switch to bass, as there were always too many great guitar players and no one to play bass. Enjoying the bass even more than guitar he sought out a permanent playing situation, which turned out to be the Phat Boyz in 2004. He’s been happily holding down the bottom line ever since.
