Ph.D formed in the early 80s when Keyboard player Tony Hymas and drummer Simon Phillips from the Jeff Beck Band joined up with vocalist Jim Diamond from Bandit and the Alexis Korner Blues Band. In 1981 "I Won't Let You Down" from Ph.D's self titled debut album was a massive worldwide hit, reaching the number 1 spot across Europe and the world.
Guests on the record included Stan Sultzman (Tenor Saxophone), Mark Creaney (Drums), Phil Palmer (Guitar), and Hughie Burns (Guitar)
Ph.D Two was released two years later and once again spawned an international hit "I Didn't Know". As well as appearances from Simon Phillips and Mark Creaney, the album also featured the guitar work of Jeff Beck on "I Didn't Know" and Ray Russel on The Fifth May 1. After three years of constant recording and writing the band went their seperate ways. Tony returned to write and compose with the Jeff Beck Band as well as numerous Jazz and Classical pieces, while Jim went on to have massive success as a solo artist with A&M scoring a worldwide No.1 with "I Should Have Known Better."
Ph.D Three is as the title suggests the third album to come from Tony Hymas and Jim Diamond under the name Ph.D. This album which began life in late 2006 will be the first album of new material from Ph.D for more than twenty five years and as such will be hotly anticipated by the cult fan base that the band have built up and reconnected with recently with the reissue of the bands first two albums.
Ph.D 3 features guest apperances from Simon Phillips on drums and Jeff Lee Johnson on guitar.
