Born and raised in the city of where big dreams are made of, 22-year-old Brooklyn native Phenom brings a unique point of view along with a versatile skill set to the Hip-Hop game. Whether it’s the spitfire classic style of “Stereo Typpin” or the radio friendly flare of tracks like “Back With You”, Phenom rhymes with an undeniable intelligence and lyricism. As an artist, he can best be described as a natural talent. Along with his compelling back-story, Phenom has not only worked his way up but has grown to become a truly gifted wordsmith as well as dynamic performer. .... Hailing from the ‘hood and having grown up around all of the excess of the streets, Phenom weaves lyrical tales from the perspective of a city kid who’s grown up and out of the box of the ghetto without ever forgetting where he came from. You can say the streets made him smart, but school made him smarter. As a Howard University student, the rapper challenges longstanding concepts of the typical Hip-Hop artist and his music defies what many consider “real” Hip-Hop artistry to be. “Real music doesn’t have to come out of the inner city gangster lifestyle or a jailhouse,” he says. “My music is still real—I’m still an inner city kid who grew up, but I went to school and got a degree.” .... My writing process is not a lengthy one. When I hear the beat I’ll find a mood and paint an image to that beat. My writing style mirrors the beat I’m listening to at the time. The lyrical style is easy on the ear. I always try to convey a message lyrically. ...... WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A PERFORMER? .... My favorite part of being a performer, as an up comer, is living up to expectations when I’m performing live. When you can prove the haters wrong, or better yet satisfy the audience to a degree they didn’t expect. You see them rocking, heads bopping and it’s like ‘o wow I didn’t see it coming.’ But I always know it’s in me so my favorite part is living up to that. ...... WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES? .... Jay-Z, 2-Pac and Biggie are my essential influences. Joe Budden, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss, Nas and some current artists like fabulous, Maino, TI, and Lil Wayne. ...... WHAT DOES HIP-HOP MEAN TO YOU? .... Hip-Hop is more than music. I think of a cultural phenomenon that came about before my time and evolved to what it is now. There’s a class at Howard called Hip Hop 101. Hip-hop has many different faces. Hip-hop to me is express thought through art—my art is my music. If I have something to say it’s gonna come out through hip-hop. ...... WHAT ARE YOU GOALS FOR 2010 & BEYOND? .... Inking a deal with a major record label. But really I just want to get my music out there nationwide. Of course I would like recognition, awards and nominations across the board.
