Phil Gould was born Hong-Kong, grew up Isle of Wight, dabbled with instruments until age 15 when drums took over. First band folk-rock, a la Fairport Convention. He played in a number of bands, the best of which was called Joe Bear!! Late teens, played summer seasons in holiday camps. Earned enough money, however, to be able to study through the winters and fund his own way, eventually, to the Royal Academy of Music (en route meeting maestro Mike Lindup while studying part-time at the Guildhall School of Music). Played a few sessions, then joined M (Robin Scott - Pop Muzik) and recorded two albums withe them; 'M' & 'Offical Secrets'! Great first recording experiences, which lay the foundations for the way Level 42 records were made.
Through M, Phil met Wally Badarou, who was to become an integral part of Level 42, which evolved, with Mike Lindup, brother Boon and fellow IoW compadre Mark King, the same year and also involved, again from the M sessions, Gary Barnacle. Spent 20's (80's) in Level 42. Now spend time writing, playing and producing in any number of scenarios, anything to not be on the road, basically! Though the live element is creeping back in again these days!
Phil would like to thank all those who played, sang or technically assisted on these tracks. It's a rare honour indeed to have access to such special musicians, and such great people!
The Gould, Brown & Black album 'Terraforming' is available in hard copy from the web-site - www.philgould.com - and for download from i-Tunes! Come and have a look at the web-site and join the forum. News and more info, videos and pictures will be added in the coming weeks
The album Watertight has now been released on ITunes. CDs are also available on Bongo Saloon Records and can be bought at philgould.com. Thanks to all who helped me get this music out there, hope you who listen will think our efforts well worth it.
Hi Phil. Couldn't agree more with your comment. Those in covert power peddle class "A" Fear as those starving for peace become more hooked on empty lines and mind altering disinformation such as Tamifear... Loving the tunes. Stay well... David
Hiya, thanks for being a friend - I enjoyed visiting YourSpace :-) Keep it up May your life be full of love, light and fun... hugs SOREN - Beats for change - NYERTUN
Hi Phil, wishing you and yours a merry christmas, and thanking you for a brilliant time this summer at the ginglik, shepherds bush(so good i saw you twice), live music has never been better!!!!!!!!!!
I was always envious of that kit and my mate bought one. It is beautiful and I thought it sounded great although am I right in noticing you play a small Gretch live now? I saw Buddy rich a few times which blew me away and the tone of the kit was amazing. Got the chance briefly to play a Gretch kit in London back in '85. The bass drum felt like a heart beat with a great punch!!! Out of my price bracket though then... Also downsized my Premier "heinz 57" 8 piece and went for a small kit 4 piece, Pearl DLX Art Blakey with a "Chad Valley sized" 18 inch bass drum... but it really kicks...
Dear Phil, I always adored your playing style, ever since the Level 42 days. I like to stay in touch with musicians I respect and find exceptional and I have to thank you for accepting my friendship on MySpace.
Hey wanted to tell you that my favorite track now is color of my pain! Cannot stop playing it!!! Maybe one day I will get over the pond to see you play live!!! all the best!!!
