About me:
WHAT IS ACT-SO?
ACT-SO is an acronym for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological & Scientific Olympics, it is a program to encourage, recognize, and reward academic and cultural achievements among high school students of African-American descent through local and national competitions. Competitive categories include the Humanities, Performing Arts, Sciences, and Visual Arts.

WHO SPONSORS ACT-SO?
Nationally, ACT-SO is sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. ACT-SO also receives support from schools, community, organizations, churches, foundations, private corporations and individuals.

Locally, ACT-SO is sponsored by the Philadelphia Branch of the NAACP. Support for the Philadelphia ACT-SO program comes from the tireless work of local NAACP branch members and other mentors and coaches who volunteer their time and resources. Additional support comes from individuals and partnerships with Philadelphia area businesses, corporations, and educational institutions. The 2007 Philadelphia NAACP ACT-SO competition was proudly brought to you in part by the contributions of the following sponsors: Robert T. Archie, Jr., Esquire; Congressman Robert A. Brady (D., PA); Duane, Morris & Heckscher LLP; Frederick Felder, President, Felder General Contractor, Inc.; Preit Associates, L.P.; Sprague & Sprague Law Firm; Mayor John F. Street; and Urban Health Systems, Inc. We would like to thank all our sponsors for their continued support of us, as well as their continued efforts in facilitating opportunities for students to work toward self-awareness and development of leadership skills.

WHO FOUNDED ACT-SO?
Vernon Jarrett (1913-2004), a renowned author and journalist for the Chicago Sun Times, conceived the idea of an “Olympics of the Mind” that would promote and reward academic achievers the way sports heroes are honored. In 1978, the first national ACT-SO competition was held in Portland, Oregon with participants from eleven (11) cities. Currently, over 460 NAACP branches from cities nationwide participate in the ACT-SO program.
The Philadelphia ACT-SO Program was launched in 1978 under the leadership of the late Honorable Alphonso Deal, President of the North Philadelphia Branch NAACP. It began with approximately 50 applicants and the Philadelphia NAACP was one of the original participants in the inaugural national competition held in Portland, Oregon.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?
ACT-SO is designed for high school students in grades 9 through 12 (up to 19 years of age), of African-American descent. Students must be a citizen of the United States and an amateur in their category of competition.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN ACT-SO?
ACT-SO participants gain invaluable learning experiences that will assist them throughout their education. The challenges they face are made easier with mentorship and participation in a variety of enrichment activities. Students also receive substantial assistance toward the development of skills and enhancement of their talents.
Local winners receive certificates and appropriate awards provided by participating corporations, individuals and the Philadelphia Branch NAACP. At the National and Local levels, first, second and third place gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded. The National ACT-SO cash awards are $1000, $750 and $500 in each category. In addition, winners may receive laptop computers and/or other gift items.

WHEN DOES THE ACT-SO COMPETITION TAKE PLACE?
The Philadelphia ACT-SO Competition will take place at Rock Hall, Temple University on April 5, 2008.
The National ACT-SO Competition will take place at Disney World in Orlando, Florida from July 30 to August 8, 2008.
PLEASE NOTE: to be eligible for the first prize local
awards, contestants must compete at the National Competition.
