Bio
.. .. .. .. ...... Layout by ..CoolChaser.. .. .. ...... .. .. .. .. .. .... .. .. .. .. .. .. At the early age of five, Philip would stand in front of his mother's stereo and sing along with the radio, using his mother's hairbrush for a microphone. He would always entertain his mother and other family members as if he were on the "Grand Ole Opry." At the age of twelve, he would perform his first solo at "St. Joseph High School." After the rush of his first "public appearance," he knew that he wanted more and would do anything to be able to play again, and again. Growing up in Catholic Schools and being raised by his mother and aunt, he was going to have a tough time getting his mother to approve of his dreams; a traveling musician. Around the age of 14, Philip appeared older than what he really was, and found himself sneaking in old bars and taverns around Huntington, West Virginia. Not knowing how old he really was, they would let him in and he would set on bar stools and entertain the patrons, mostly elderly men, for hours. Then, realizing that Philip wasn't in bed sleeping when he was supposed to, his mother would find him out and, well, you could only imagine what she did to him then! In his later teens, he realized that he could not make it in Huntington, so he took off on the road with a good friend, Billy Beach, and they started traveling to different cities and states performing as a duo known as "West Coast Turnaround." Mainly sleeping in cars and hitchhiking to wherever their hearts desired, the two would part after several years of hard traveling. Philip knew that there would be something else for him. So, they returned to Huntington and went their separate ways. Philip settled down and married his high school sweetheart and had his first child. Working as a milkman, a police officer, and for the United States Post Office, Philip wasn't happy being in the "norm," as you might say. He knew in his heart that these jobs were only a front for his marriage and his family. This was not what he wanted for his life; it was not making him happy. The marriage soon ended, and Philip went back to the music industry. Once again, despite people calling him crazy, he didn't let that hold him back. Keeping his head high and his hand on the wheel, he continued singing and joining different bands and groups around the tri-state area. He performed for the next twenty years as a solo artist and as part of several groups. In 1992, Philip settled down again with his second wife, Tammie. This time, he knew that "man couldn't live on bread alone." She seemed to be his backbone and support, something he never had before. Being from a family of musicians herself, she understood the "monster inside him." Around 1996, Philip traveled back and forth to Nashville, Tennessee, knocking on doors of many labels, only to be turned away, time after time. But finally one door openend - Tyneville of Nashville. They offered him an Internet Record Deal. Not knowing much about them, but taking whatever he could get, he would sign with them and soon be on his way to the "big time!" Only after several months of operation, the label folded. Just his luck! Picking up where he left off, he went back to the bars and the fairs and regattas that he would perform around the area. This was still not where he wanted to be, but that seemed to be his only choice. In April 2007, while traveling to a local hardware store, Philip suffered a horrible car accident. Not knowing at the time, as months went by, he was told that he needed to have a cervical disc replaced in his neck that would require a very serious operation. The operation would require that a two-inch incision be cut on the front of his neck. Philip didn't want to do this, but, for him to be able to walk and function in his everyday life, he had to do it. Not know if he would be able to speak, or much less sing again, he had to take the chance. So, on November 28, 2007 he went under the knife, hoping and praying for the best. The surgery went well, and he had a "dissolvable plate" inserted in his neck; one of the first known in this area. For the first couple of weeks, his voice was soft and subtle, not like the loud, beaming voice that everyone was used to hearing from him. After several months, Philip tried to sing, but as he started, nothing came out. He would try, and try, but it just wasn't there. Philip knew that this couldn't happen to him. God could not let this happen to him. He asked why me? But the answer soon came. After praying and praying, and praying some more, Philip started singing 24/7. He knew that it was there, but he would have to try harder and harder. He would go to his friend's studio, sit in front of the microphone and just keep pushing himself until he couldn't push any longer. He took breaks, and then sang some more. He continued this for two months until one day, as he was singing, it finally sounded like the old Philip Dain Powell that he used to be. After regaining his precious voice, Philip decided to start playing again to really gain his "chops" back. He would go back to an old band called "Average Joe." He performed for several months with them until he realized it wasn't for him. He was far more than an "average Joe." The night life and the bars, there had to be something better than this. All along, it was there the whole time. God healed him, so singing for the Lord would be the ultimate "gig" of all. In June, 2009, Philip decided to take a new path and started singing for the Lord and recorded his first Gospel album titled "God Is Love." Everything seemed to be in the right place now - his life and his music, so it was worth one more try. In August 2009, he traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, to meet members of HMG where he is now a family member of the Christian Country Music Association and will be leading a new life in Christian Country music, and the rest will be up to the "Good Lord above." Everything we learn and live is through Jesus Christ, our Lord and savior. And if you believe in Him and yourself, you can do anything your heart desires. Bio Written by: Tammie Powell -
