Philip Kohnen was born in Fairfax, VA on March 5th, 1982. He moved with his mother, two sisters and brother to Atlanta, GA, where Philip was raised. When Philip was 16 years old, he came home from school one day to find a guitar in his bedroom, which he shared with his brother. Since that day, Philip has rarely put the guitar down. He taught himself how to play guitar by experimentation. In fact, most of Philip's knowledge of music was learned "on the bandstand." When Philip was in college at The University of Georgia, he played in multiple bands, including AKA Rude, Dian Nao, and Boone Dog Trio. He has toured with a nationally recognized Sublime cover band called "Wrong Way: The Music of Sublime." Philip began taking lessons with Rob McMaken of the world/folk duo Dromedary, and that is when his musicianship was taken to the next level. Philip studied Cuban music, Klezmer, and other world music with Rob McMaken. Eventually, Philip contacted a percussionist whom he admires greatly named Roberto Rodriguez. He traveled to Manhattan to study Cuban rhythm with Rodriguez in December of 2005. While in New York, Philip also studied with Tresero/Guitarist Ben Lapidus of Brooklyn. Since his travels to New York, Philip has been actively writing and recording new music in the Salsa style. Philip strongly believes that Hispanic culture as a whole, and specifically Cuban culture, is going to play a pivotal role in the transformation of American popular music in the 21st century.
