Bio
Philipp was born in Berlin 1981 and started playing piano at age 10 since it turned out to be more fun than playing the recorder. After a couple of years having a classical education with different music teachers, he got in contact with a so called "leadsheet" of a blues. The idea of improvising something which is not written down on the paper sounded really weird at that time. Though this challenge of making music out of the moment was and still is Philipps main interest. He attended some local Funk and Jazz Bands, played in England, Germany, Poland and Hungary, participated at Jugend Jazzt Dortmund (3rd place) and finally started to enroll at the Jazz Piano program at the Artez Conservatorium Arnhem in the Netherlands 2002. During his Bachelor studies, Philipp won the 1st price of the "International Competition for Soloist and Ensemble in Kerkrade (NL)" 2006 and the 3rd Price at the "Artez Holland Casino Jazz Contest" 2007 with the Band the Orka Quartet. At the International Solo Piano Competition in Vilnius Jazzimprovizacija 2008 he got a 3rd place. Furthermore he accompanied Musicians like: Bert Joris, Tom Beek, Mark Gross, Tony Lakatos, Ilja Rijngoud and Ruud Ouwehand with the Dual City Orchestra (NL) under Rob Horsting and Rini Swinkels and the Guus Tangelder Bigband. 2008 Philipp finished his Master of Music at the Artez Conservatorium where he studied with Jasper van't Hof and extensively with Simon Nabatov. 2010 Philipp was invited to the New Generations Workshop in Switzerland Frauenfeld. Since 2008 Philipp is an academic at the Artez Conservatorium for minor piano. As well he is organizing Workshops for the Masterstudents of Artez. Up to now there were some nice workshops with: Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Claudio Puntin and Jim Black. At the moment Philipp is a leader of his own Quartet, the PHILIPP RÜTTGERS QUARTET. they just released their debut CD "THE TRAVELER" at Konnex Records. He is playing as a sidemen with the Florian Fleischer Quintet and the Katharina Maschmeyer Quartet. Philipp is also a member of "AMP", Arnhems Muziek Platform, a try out platform for all kinds of creative music. -

About Philipp
Many different influences from Ragtime to HipHop, Classical to Free Jazz or Balkan Oddmeter to Pop without going into the progress of direct reproduction gives Philipp a broad, still expanding basis of musical ideas to fulfill his ever growing need to perform right to the heart of the audience.
