Influences
Crowded House (or anything by either Neil or Tim Finn), U2, Prince, David Bowie, Beck, The Smiths, R.E.M, XTC, Van Morrison, Mother's Finest, Stevie Wonder, Massive Attack, and I'm partial to a bit of the old hippety hop. I don't think I sound like any of these fine artists though...............hehe
Sounds Like
Well, this is what the critics are saying about my last album, Ancient Light:
"Full of well writen, superbly structured songs that have a lightly infectious nature" www.toxicpete.co.uk
"Phil's sound (is) quite unlike anything else on the market...the musicianship is excellent with tight arrangements and exquisite harmonies. This could be an early contender for best independent release of 2007" Never For Nothing CCM Newsletter
"Slight indie rock by way of mature pop...Phil Lewis is a singer/songwriter whose talent is unmistakeable....a solid piece of work" www.ukmusicsearch.co.uk
"Don't Give Up, Don't Give in is a catchy indie-pop tune you could imagine Ian Broudie producing" www.indie-mp3.co.uk
"The CD contains some tasty little pop nuggets.....good quality throughout". www.tastyfanzine.org.uk
"MORE THAN YOUR AVERAGE WHITE CHRISTIAN MALE WITH A SIX STRING" Cross Rhythms Magazine 2007.
Welcome to my world - it can be a little scary.
So let's get the first thing out of the way, I'm a Christian. I think that's pretty cool, but I know alot of people don't - but stick with me!! I hope that my faith informs my songwriting, rather than dominates it. There are enough bands out there who 'preach' some sort of message or other, and I have no desire to add to the noise. I prefer a more reflective approach that I hope even non-Christians will find accessible.
I've been writing songs since I was a wee lad (I think I wrote my first song when I was about 12) and I hope that I've got better at it as I've gone along.
Along the way, I have made several trips into various recording studios and recorded lots of my stuff. I've recorded several EPs and, last year, recorded my first full length album, "Whispering". I've had some very encouraging reviews of the stuff I've recorded, one review called me "the best unsigned singer/songwriter in South Wales" (I'm not sure I deserve that, but I was very grateful).
I'm also very proud to say that I was a semi-finalist in the 2009 UK Songwriting Contest.
I've never been very good at keeping bands together, so I've kinda stopped trying and just focused on writing and recording - which is the part I enjoy most. Just after finishing recording my album, I started suffering from tinnitus, so that's also made me a bit more reluctant to put a band together and go and play in places where all anybody wants to hear is a cover version of "Brown Sugar".
So this is me - Christian singer/songwriter (and very reluctant performer!).
Besides that i d have a passion for most kinds of music (my CD collection is FAAAAAARRRR too big!), and I enjoy all the usual stuff like films, going to the pub with my mates, and watching and playing football.
So come on into my world, you never know, you might be pleasantly surprised.............................................
