SPOTLIGHT ON FERAL COLONIES:
If you've made the commitment to become a feral colony caretaker, here a few tips to help ensure that the animals are safe and can live a happy life free from disease, hunger and danger.
1. Humanely trap and alter every cat.
2. Ensure that cats are isolated from roads, people and other animals.
3. Monitor, feed and water the cats daily and provide veterinary care as needed. (this can be done by humanely trapping the animals to be seen by a vet and then re-released into their colony.
4. Ensure that the cats have access to a secure, warm, dry shelter and are not subjected to harsh weather conditions.
5. The cats must be kept away from other animals so they do not injure or kill wildlife.

RESCUE STORIES OF THE MONTH:
Archimedes the Rabbit and Merlin the cat made fast friends after being rescued by Collective members. 'Arky' had spent five years doing hard time in a wire cage on the front lawn of a home where his captors were using him to assist them in breeding rabbits to sell. His feet were splayed on the wire bottom floor of his cage and this social and loveable rabbit was languishing away sadly day by day by day. Describing Arky as close to death and 'useless' to them, he was given to rescuers and heading for a new life. Merlin was a stray kitten who was very afraid of people. Within a few days of his rescue, Merlin met Arky and the two of them were instantly inseperable!
This lively little beagle was rescued after being abandoned in the back yard of a home that was occupied by her former guardians. Leaving for a homeless shelter, they left behind this poor girl. Pretzel was taken in, loved and cared for until she was placed in a great new home! Keep an eye out for monthly Animal Rescue Collective stories!

I am the voice of the voiceless; Through me the dumb shall speak, Till the deaf world's ears be made to hear, The wrongs of the wordless weak. And I am my brothers keeper, And I will fight his fights; And speak the words for beast and bird, Till the world shall set things right.

Our task must be to free ourselves . . .
by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.

About me: The Animal Rescue Collective is a group of volunteers who work to put an end to the crisis of stray cat and dog overpopulation in and around the Central Florida area.
*We do this by humanely trapping and altering stray cats in and around our community.
*Responding immediately to those who contact us with wounded animals.
*Sharing free cat and dog food with tens of low income families.
*Paying most of/entire vet bills for low income families who have companions in need.
*Fostering recovering animals- during which time we provide them with a safe, comfortable and stress free environment, vaccinating them, getting them tested, flea treated and preparing them for the transition to their adoptive homes.
*Carefully prescreening potential homes for fostered animals and providing new guardians with information, free food and bedding.
The Collective rescues, rehabilitates and rehouses dozens of animals on an annual basis and fights to change some very disturbing
statistics.
An estimated 5 million cats and dogs are killed in shelters each year. That's one about every six and one half seconds. Tragically, unwanted animals are euthanized because homes cannot be found.
Tens of millions of stray and feral cats struggle to survive on their own outdoors. Although some are altered and live in managed colonies, most are not altered and receive no health care. They reproduce at will and many suffer from illness or injury before dying.
It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated $2 billion each year to round up, house, kill, and dispose of homeless animals.
Two unaltered cats and all their descendents can theoretically number 420,000 in just seven years.
Two unaltered dogs and all their descendents can theoretically number 67,000 in just six years.

Cute puppies in pet store windows are hard to resist. Before you make the decision to purchase an animal from a pet store, please view this video depicting the cruelty of puppy mills. Puppy mills are substandard breeding operations and result in the needless suffering of millions of animals on a daily basis. If you are ready to bring a companion animal into your home, you need to look no further than your local animal shelter!
The Animal Rescue Collective is also engaged in the global campaign to shut down Huntingdon Life Sciences. We work to bring an end to the production, sale and profit of the notoriously cruel 'delicacy' called foie gras. We work to expose the horrors of the bloody fur industry. And to promote a compassionate lifestyle by going vegetarian. We do these things through effective protesting, community outreach, leafleting and tabling in and around our community.
Who I'd like to meet: Those interested in joining the Collective as we strive to end the pain, suffering and needless deaths of so many millions of dogs and cats each year through spay/neuter programs, finding responsible and loving guardians and maintaining feral colonies through providing food, housing and vaccinations on a constant basis. Those willing to donate time, thier homes and/or thier services to those rescued animals who have been taken in by the Collective's volunteers. (i.e. bedding, food, homes to foster in, vaccination and/or spay neuter services, monetary donations, etc.)
WARNING THIS VIDEO IS VERY GRAPHIC. EVERY YEAR, THOUSANDS OF DOGS AND CATS ARE VICTIMS OF THE BLOODY FUR INDUSTRY, AS WELL AS MILLIONS OF RACCOONS, MINK, LYNX, FOXES, CHINCHILLAS AND OTHER SENTIENT BEINGS WHO ARE VIOLENTLY MURDERED FOR THE SKIN OFF THEIR BACKS. PLEASE MAKE THE COMPASSIONATE DECISION TO BOYCOTT FUR.

This wonderful sanctuary for former lab primates and other unwanted primates is a blessing for the wonderful creatures who have been lucky enough to be rescued and brought there.
It is also the home of the famous Oliver once believed to be a human-chimp hybrid. He was bought and shamelessly exploited and then more or less dumped in a animal reserve that went out of business. He would languish in a 5 foot cage in a primate experiment lab basement for 9 years. This was very sad.
Thankfully Oliver spends his old age in the wonderful Primarily Primates sanctuary.
Please read my blog, go to their website and learn and spread the word.
Happy Thanksgiving. Please keep me posted as to what is going on and anyway that I can help to spread the word of all the good that you are doing. You are giving these poor animals a voice and the hope for a wonderful new life with a loving new family. I would never trade my rescued pets for all the tea in China.

“I talk to him when I'm lonesome like; and I'm sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that.” ~W. Dayton Wedgefarth
