Interests

  • General

Being in the restaurant business in some capacity all of my life, I've done a lot of different jobs. Busser, waiter, manager, sommelier...But in 2000 I decided I wanted to grow organic specialty vegetables for restaurants. My specialty has been heirloom tomatoes. I grew on a very limited scale for the first few years, then did an internship at an organic farm and eventually rented land to continue. Last year I worked at Branch Creek Farm in central Bucks County, and though I had a 'series of unfortunate events' that summer, it was a great experience. I still teach one-off classes in wine every once in a while, and give talks on heirloom vegetables. When I have the time I also like to quilt, work on my house, cook and generally play hostess, go for long drives anywhere and long hikes everywhere with my guy & my dog.
  • Music

Grew up listening to Bach and Billie Holliday, was a mod in high school, and co-created the mod fanzine Wha-a-am!, with Liz Pepin. Started another fanzine, Lieben Und Arbeiten, with Dana Mozer (Freud's theory that all you needed in life was Love and Work) of political pop music, of which Billy Bragg was our guiding light (thanks, Bill, still!). Love jazz, jump jive, western swing, rockabilly, old-school R&B, Neko Case, the Scissor Sisters, The Velvets, Joni Mitchell, Floyd Tillman, Louis XIV, Sarah Vaughan, soundtracks to all of John Waters' movies, soundtracks to all of Wes Anderson's movies (a big shout-out to Mark Mothersbaugh!), The Flying Burrito Brothers, Wilco, X/The Knitters, Dave Alvin, The Monkees (Headquarters was the first album I picked out myself--when I was 5...I still love it!), Ruth Brown, Curtis Mayfield, the Libertines, though I'm a little late to the game--Robert Pollard, the WHOLE Wainright Family (and extended family!), The Jam and Paul's solo work (see you in NYC!), Charlie Hunter, Fantasia, The Specials/Special AKA, Otis Redding, Richard Thompson, Buddy and Ella Johnson, NRBQ (including the Whole Wheat Horns!), The Jazz Butcher, Ray Charles...Have seen so many great concerts in my life, and know there are quite a few more out there still to see.
  • Movies

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Rouge Baiser, Breaking Away, Team America World Police, High Fidelity, A Mighty Wind, This is Spinal Tap and all of the Christopher Guest movies, Babette's Feast, Young Frankenstein, The Triplets of Bellville, Robert Altman's movies, esp The Last Picture Show and Shortcuts, all of Sam Peckinpa's movies, esp The Wild Bunch, John Waters and all his movies, Chinatown, Cisco Pike, Gap-Toothed Women, King of Hearts, The Rose, all of crazy Ken Russell's movies, esp Women in Love, Harold and Maude, Sammie and Rosie Get Laid, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, Truly Madly Deeply, My Architect, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation
  • Television

The Simpsons, Weeds, The Daily Show, Dexter, South Park, all of Anthony Bourdain's shows, most of those damn shows on HGTV (embarrasing), the news. Lots of RADIO! American Routes, Jerry Blavat - The Geater with the Heater - on Saturday nights @ 6pm, The Blues Show with Johhny Meister, Fresh Air, Le Show, and most other things on NPR (especially if my friend Jennifer has a story on!), I'll suffer through WXPN (it should be so much better!), KALX (Berkeley in the house!)
  • Books

Mostly read DIY and cookbooks, Joyce Goldstein being my favorite former boss/cookbook author!, but also like bio/autobiographaphies and memoirs (hello to Hillary Carlip and all my fellow Oddballs!), Anthony Bourdain's books (currently reading The Nasty Bits), slowly making my way through The Omnivore's Dilemma, everything by MFK Fisher...And oh my god!!! Amy Sedaris' I Like You, Hospitality Under the Influence...need I say anything more?
  • Heroes

..</a Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Billy Bragg, Barack Obama and Michael Pollan - and the people that grow our food!

Hi Sarah! Looking forward to working with you all again. It was a pleasure - and with all the new stuff we have going this year, it's hard not to be excited... if not overwhelmed!

Did you recieve a wholesale email from us? We'd gotten some responses, but I also got an error message from our server when I sent it so I can't be sure all recipients were contacted.
    Thanks!

Hello, Sarah! I believe I might have spoken with you on the phone briefly a few Sundays back. Thanks for finding us. I think we have an agreement to get some Bartlett pears into Reading Terminal in the near future, so keep an eye out for 'em! Have a good day!
