Phil Thompson AKA Moonface is a DJ and producer living and breathing the underground dance music scene for over 20 years now. Since being signed to John Digweed’s label Bedrock, Phil became resident at the monthly Bedrock nights in London and Brighton. Phil has also been a regular at high profile events in the UK, as well as major club nights and dance festivals covering most of the top spots around the globe. Recent gigs have been at the JUNK club, Southampton; Ministry of Sound, London; Global Underground, Moscow plus regular events in Greece.
As a producer, Moonface has an impressive discography including releases on numerous compilation CDs such as the ‘Balance Series 006’ on EQ Recordings and the legendary Global Underground and Nubreed series, including 'GU is 10'; a must-have compilation celebrating 10 years of the Global Underground sound. Bedrock released ‘Layered Sounds’ mixed by John Digweed and Phil Thompson and the now classic sounds of ‘Between Worlds’. A six track album of Moonface tracks, was also released on the same label and in 2001 was voted album of the month by several industry magazines.
More recently, Phil remixed Colin Dale’s ‘Joy’ out on Endemic, plus his Moonface track ‘Know So’ along with more to follow. Back in 2008, Paulo Mojo’s remix of ‘You Get So Give’ featured on the compilation CD ‘Bedrock 10 - Past Present and Future’. This year, Bedrock 11 will feature yet another classic Moonface track ‘Futurized Fears’ remixed by Guy J released in October 2009.
2009 saw Phil looking for a new direction and this turned up in the form of DJ, producer and friend Tim Cook. After a number of years promoting and playing at their own club nights 'Cartel', alongside industry heavy weights such as Terry Francis, Omid 16b and Adultnapper, Phil and Tim then created the new project ‘Animalz’ about to be released into the wild! As well as working in the studio together; they already have a string of remixes lined up. They’ll also be performing together; back to back with a laptop and 2 deck Dj midi controller each and the use of loops and fx to keep things moving. Two very distinctive styles coming together to make one relentless vibe.

ED006 MOONFACE "KNOW SO"
01. Original Mix 02. Greg Mak Mix 03. Xaric Mix
Endemic Digital continue their run with Deep and Tech driven House, this time with the talented producer Moonface with his debut for the imprint entitled 'Know So. Moonface needs little introduction to the scene having tracks released on the legendary label Bedrock, brainchild of John Digweed!
Following on from his awesome remix of Colin Dale's 'Joy' (Out Now on Endemic Digital) which received support from DJ's including Carl Cox, Josh Wink and Erick Morillo, he returns with 'Know So', a storming heads down deep tech houser layered with his trademark dubby effects, vocal samples, driving beats and a twisted bassline, perfect for setting the pace and stepping up the mix that little bit further!
On remix duties, we bring in up and coming producer Greg Mak who delivers a nice deep inspired interpretion with a distinguished bassline leading the track in to more of a driving floorfiller, making use of the vocal snippets. Finishing off the release is French producer Xaric who takes things underground with a deep more progressive approach for those early morning slots.
Colin Dale 'Joy' Moonface remix. Released on Endemic Digital 12th Jan 2009
This track already receives massive feedback by artists like Josh Wink, King Unique, just to name a few. I choose to review the Phil 'Moonface' Thompson remix but don't hesitate to check out the other mixes. One undeniable fact is that Moonface did put his signature on this mix. The spacey soundscapes he creates makes your head spin. The wobbly, kinda funky deep base line takes you along, making sure your feet won't rest until...well, the end of the party or night. The moment the track starts, the groove already is present and the wobbly base line only makes the track stronger. The surprising element here is the clever use of the 303 sound which pops in unexpectedly. Is this tech house or deep house?? Let's call it tech-deep-progressive house with a sexy, spacey twist and nervous moments surrounded by mysteriously beautiful strings. Put this one in your box and let it in there, at least till summer.
