pHilosophy a.k.a. Gabriel Sechrist has been a poet all his life, but he did not begin writing rap songs until he was 18 years old. pHilosophy is a true school hip-hop lyricist that spits truth through personal reflection. His lyrical ambitions lead him to become the founder of the University of Oregons first ever Hip-Hop Organization. This group of students worked with pHilosophy to help hip-hop artists from Eugene, Oregon organize and promote their musical talents.
The pHormula is three emcees: AlpHamatic, Examine and pHilosophy. Combined with DJ pHonics, the Sound Scientist, they create a style of hip-hop that is catchy but not commercial. The pHormula is known for their high-energy performances and original hard hitting beats. As a group they are true to the art form intertwining turntable skills with insightful lyrics to form a style reminiscent of the roots of hip-hop, while still crossing musical borders.
What the pH? is the pHormula’s third self-produced CD and is undoubtedly their best. This album has been long in the making. During that time The pHormula has been waiting for the right combination of beats and lyrics -- carefully picking the songs that best represent their the multifaceted style. This is displayed by the versatility of their favorite songs on the album: "What the pH" (title song), "Little Miss Thang", "Comfortable Silence" and "Oohh Yeah".
Many people who have heard The pHormula's music through MySpace.com and CD Baby compare it to Pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest and Outkast. The pHormula is self-described as a mix between Jurassic 5 and Outkast, but still proudly reps that their style is undefinable. The pHormula has shared the stage with The Game, KRS-1, Saul Williams, Atmosphere, Capadonna, C Rayz Walz, Lyrics Born, People Under the Stairs, Mr. Liff, The Alcoholics and many more mainstream and underground artists. The pHormula has sold hundreds of CDs in the Eugene and Portland areas and has had thousands of downloads on www.myspace.com and www.itunes.com.
