GeneralTheology, tin whistles, double reed instruments, especially bagpipes and technology. I run the Linux operating system (Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon) about 99 percent of the time) and Windows XP Home Edition, mainly to play radio stations that only use Microsoft applications.
MusicIrish, Scottish, Music from Brittany, Wales and Great Britan, or Celtic music, blues, jazz and religious music
MoviesI don't watch many of those. I am more of an "audio" person rather than enjoying video.
TelevisionNo, don't watch that much except for occasional shows on the Sparta PBS, such as Nova. I have too much other stuff to do (my ministries, making reeds, cleaning apartment, etc.) and I can listen and do most of that stuff at the same time.
BooksBible, science, history, science fiction and fantasy.
HeroesJesus Christ, my mom, dad, brother, sister and my two sons, of course. Also good Christians, Bernard Grigsby, Matt McNeely, Ed Harrison, Robbie Hannan, Paddy Keenan, Paddy Maloney, Ronan Browne, Dickie Deegan, and many other uilleann pipers and Irish musicians and fans.

   Phil's Blurbs
About me:
I am a Christian hillbilly, born and raised near Sparta, NC in a community called Twin Oaks.

I got interested in Celtic music when I was in the US Navy and got an R&R flight to Prestwick, Scotland where I met my ex-wife, (Hannah) Anna Gilfillan, from Kilmarnock, Scotland.

When I got a job teaching electronics at Galax City High School in the vocational education department in 1985, I bought my first tinwhistle and got really hooked on the music.

At the age of 54, I decided to take up the uilleann pipes, so I bought a practice set from Mark Hillmann, and a year later, added the drones to make a 1/2 set.

At one of the schools I went to, Irish Week at Elkins, WV, I got to play a C chanter and fell in love with it. I ordered a C chanter from Seth Gallagher and later on, two regulators. I had gotten Pat Sky to make me a set of drones, and I use the Hillmann bag and bellows, so I have a "mixed" 3/4 C set, (working as a 1/2 set) which is what I play to please myself. I only play the concert set when practicing/playing with Naomi's Fancy.

The worst thing about playing the uilleann bagpipes is that you have to make your own reeds to get one that you can play well. I struggled for two years with an out of tune chanter reed, so I finally went to the school in Elkins, WV and took two weeks (two different summers) of reedmaking. I had a great reed after that that played for 7 years that hardly ever needed adjusting, just a bit in the winter and again in the summer.

Since I live in the hotbed for Old Time music, I like to jam with the local musicians using my whistles and bagpipes (when they are working).

I know quite a few old time tunes, but I don't know their names. My friend gave me a mountain dulcimer and I am trying to learn that instrument, even though I am string impaired.

I had to drop out of Naomi's Fancy due to illness. I am really looking forward to going to sessions and playing with the band occasionally again.

Who I'd like to meet:
God, Jesus Christ. Alexander Mack, Christians, Paddy Maloney, Robbie Hannan, Dickie Deegan, Ronan Browne, other Irish pipers and any ITM musicians/lovers.

Haven't talked with you in awhile. I hope things are going well up there in the mountains and that your reeds continue buzzing.

A Poem by Babaji
A Himalayan Saint

Love and serve all mankind, Assist everyone

Be cheerful, be courteous
Be a dynamo of irrepressible happiness
See God and good in every face
There is no saint without a past
There is no sinner without a future
Praise every soul
If you cannot praise someone, let them pass out of your life

Be original, be inventive
Dare, dare, and then dare more
Do not imitate. Stand on your own ground
Do not lean on the borrowed staff of others
Think your own thoughts. Be yourself
All perfection and all virtues of God are hidden inside you, reveal them
God is already within you reveal Him

Let God emancipate you. Let your life be that of a rose
Through silence it speaks in the language of fragrance

That stinks that you won't be able to make the workshop! I was really looking forward to seeing ya. If Paddy's cool with it, I'm gonna take some video and post it on my YouTube channel.
Hope you're doing better & playing lots of music!

can't be arsed to do the quiz Phil, but like you, I am obsessed with the uilleann pipes and those who can actually play them.

By the way 'Telling the Bees' CD is out, see there profile on our top friends list.
A wicked bit of English border piping from my mate, Dr Andy Letcher!

Brother Phil,

I have a new friend, and I am thrilled our first meeting was watching the greatest living piper, Paddy Keenan. Look forward to playing together. Maybe between you and Matt I can get me reeds working right.

Oh, you have a Hillman chanter? They are screamers! In making reeds for them I've found that you need to scrape the back of the scrape pretty deep to get a good hard D out of them. I don't own one, but I know Mark and some people who have his chanters.
