InfluencesI've been influenced by so many...some have names...others have only a sound. Here are a few names if that's what you're looking for: My Dad, Steve Bowman (Counting Crows, Third Eye Blind, and many many more), Steve Jordan (most recently with John Mayer...but has a list miles long), Travis Barker (Blink 182), The Dust Brothers, Zach Lind (Jimmy Eat World), Larry Mullen Jr. (U2), Max Weinberg (Bruce!, Late Night with Conan O'Brien), Rick May (various), Will Denton or here (DC Talk, Steven Curtis Chapman, Audio Adrenaline, Casting Crowns, etc....and now LeAnn Rimes), Carter Beauford (DMB), Will Champion (Coldplay), Tre Cool (Green Day), Al Foster (Miles Davis...also I was privileged to see this guy play with McCoy Tyner back at UK...incredible), Anton Fig (has one of the best signature snares I've ever played on), Pete Yorn, Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Buddy Rich, "Wuv" (P.O.D.), Adrian Young (No Doubt), "B*Wack" (David Crowder*Band and a fine creator of Reason tracks see here for good ideas and help), Darren King (Mute Math), Travis Nunn (Chris Tomlin), Dan Reiser (Norah Jones), Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin, and Wood), Blue Man Group, Leon "Ndugu" Chancler (ladies and gentlemen...this is the man who provided us with that groove on Michael Jackson's 'Billy Jean').

   About phil shay
I don't want to try to be someone I'm not and attempt to make you think I'm some gift to a music scene that's been spinning around since way before my time. I simply love to play the drums. I feel as though I was born with rhythm..and it's never been something I've had a desire to lose. Something comes over me when I'm behind the drums that I can't really explain...it's like water to my soul...but it never tastes that same or ever gets old.

Originally from the Dayton, Ohio area...I started playing drums in 7th grade after a flop starting out on clarinet in 5th. It's kind of funny...I think I was in my first band before I even owned a set of drums. Throughout Junior High and High School, playing drums in school and out of school seemed paralleled. I played in the school concert band, jazz band, and marching band, and all the while was learning different group and band dynamics with my friends trying to cover bands like Green Day, Silverchair, Nirvana, and Metallica (which I don't think we ever really pulled off that well!) as well as take our first attempts at writing our own music. My first real recording experience was during my junior year recording a 5-song EP with Rick May.

After graduating High School I moved down to Lexington, KY to begin my four years at the University of Kentucky studying Communication. I had no idea at the start of it that it would have been such a defining time in my life. During my senior year at UK, I joined a band called the norman.green.band. We ended up playing for a summer camp in Indiana called SpringHill. It was there where I met my incredible little wife, Sonnie. With the summer's end, so was the band's...and I soon found myself moving to the Phoenix, Arizona area in December of 2004. Sonnie and I got married the following January (2006).

While living in AZ I was fortunate to be a part of one of the best worship teams I had ever heard under the leadership of Doug Glynn and Tony Montoya at the Gathering at Word of Grace Church in Mesa. Since then, a lot has changed, but it was pretty incredible to be a part of something huge at the time. Birthed out of friendships started in the Gathering was yet another (but totally unique) band I was part of called, Marked. My good friends Geoff and Andi, and I, started playing and writing a little together and soon found ourselves in a few competitions that we never thought we'd get ourselves into. We first played at a southwest regional music showcase in Phoenix in April 2006 and after winning found ourselves playing at the 2006 GMA Music in the Rockies national competition in Estes Park, CO. To our total and complete surprise, we won that one too! Although we seemed to have found a pretty good indicator that what we were doing as a band was working...we realized that it was putting more pressure on our lives as friends than it was worth and decided to discontinue pursuing Marked in order to restore what was more important to each of us.

Looking ahead, I'd like to build a career (at least for a time) playing as an independent drummer. I would love to be as useful as possible for anyone in need. Like I said before, as most musicians would, I simply love to play.

If you're looking for a drummer, contact me and let's chat. I want to be ready for anything...
