Sounds Like
My accordion playing has been likened (by others) to a Cajun's. That's a tremendous compliment. In the last six years I have been trying to master Zydeco and Creole accordion styles through their old time roots in La La music. The Zyderythmics sound like - err - themselves. Kind of upbeat, funky, bluesy, reggae, ska, jazz influeneces. We put in the Louisiana grooves, with lots of our own Brit stuff. We can see folks dancing and grooving on the floor so it looks like it's working.
Just recently I've teamed up with Yves Langlois (Cajunologie, Dindon Sauvage) and Pete Gazey (plays with Tim Edey) to form Colin and the Crawfish. We are going to do some eclectic Cajun, Creole, Jazz, French, English, Irish - whatever - based stuff. We had our first paid gig on 26th May 07 and we'll put them on the schedule as we get them. There's our first ever song - Bonsoir Moreau - in the songs section here, so please rate it and let us know what you think.
Phil's passionate performances of Cajun and Zydeco music have taken him all over Britain and to Europe, the Middle East and the US, especially Louisiana where he has appeared twice at the center of Cajun culture, the Liberty Theater and on the Mardi Gras stage in Eunice and Lafayette. His most notable current band is The Zyderythmics, a kickin’ five piece. The Zyderythmics’ philosophy is simple – play the best Louisiana style Blues and Zydeco to get as many people as possible up and dancing. White Hot dance grooves from the Creole Swamps, tuned for maximum heat, ultimate dance burnout. The rhythms just grab you by the shirt and haul you onto the floor. Their first CD – White Hot Zydeco – was awarded first place for Best Zydeco CD in the 2006 European Cajunweb Awards, coming in ahead of more than 20 other entries.
Influenced by the Creole greats from Louisiana, Clifton Chenier, Geno Delafose, Rosie Ledet, Chris Ardoin and many others the Zyderythmics also bring English power and energy to their own new compositions. Every number is danceable, every song has got something to say. Phil even stood in for CJ Chenier with the Red Hot Louisiana Band at the world famous 100 Club, London, England. You'll believe a Brit can groove!
Lately Phil has expanded his repertoire into Appalachian and other American folk genres, recently recording with Virginia artistes Bill and Pam Gurley on their new CD to be released in 2009.
