Phil Wages (vocals, songwriting, and rhythm guitar).... this is my solo page. I will not post any info about a band here until it becomes a serious venture. :) I AM looking for a band (or multiple bands) to play with and just people to collaborate with.
Influences
The Short (the official answer; in no particular order) Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Jack White, The Beatles (this isn't a canned response, it's true!), Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin (both Page AND Planet), Freddie Mercury, Stone Temple Pilots, Collective Soul, Alice in Chains, Black Crowes, Bush, Dinosaur Jr, Everclear, NIN (really wanna try some similar style stuff as a side project), Presidents of the USA, Chris Cornell, Sublime, '80s revivalists (Hot Hot Heat, Killers, etc), QotSA..................to name a few.
The Long (only read if you are board; I just type fast) :) Firstly, Nirvana is what turned me onto rock music when David Hale played In Utero for me. Until then ('95), I mostly (this was a LONG time ago) listened to country. I did have some other music I listened to, such as Tom Petty and Red Hot Chili Peppers, but Nirvana is what made me want to play, along with a Summer in Oregon with my dad. I've been hunting for great music ever since. :) I would say I go to the Kurt Cobain school of thought towards songwriting which is listen to the music you like, and play it your way by simply envisioning how the music is made rather than learning lots of songs and deriving one's style (I think only musician's will know what I'm talking about). According to a documentary about Kurt I saw, he wanted to play punk music but couldn't get punk albums in his hometown. Not knowing what exactly most punk music sounded like, he imagined what punk sounded like and play guitar in that manner. This (as well as interests in bands like The Meat Puppets) is what led to his unique style. Unknowingly, I've taken a similar approach. Eddie Vedder has been a huge influence towards song structure and vocals. Additionally, I work a lot on vocals by singing along with Chris Cornell, Chris Robinson, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, The Killers, White Stripes, and various other groups. Lyrics My lyrics are intentionally strange. A while ago I decided (based on the advice of a few people) that I needed to avoid using cliches (statements and topics) in my songs. So the words to some songs may not make sense without repeated listening (hint!). ....could write more, but this seems really long. ;)
Sounds Like
I think that's sufficiently covered by Influences. As The Doobie Brothers said, "Listen to the Music".
"I Wouldn't Change A Thing" a rock duet
written by yours truly
"It's Not Enough Anymore" a rock song about
the hermit lifestyle
"The Ground Beneath Your Feet" a rock ballad
about personal freedom from society
Songfight page -
I have entered over 40 original songs on this site [38 solo and several with
collaborators] and will continue to do so; some are even good! - Recommended songs:
Pickle Juice:
a silly blues song w/ falsetto vocals
Robot Baby:
a crazy tune in tribute to the movie Demon Seed
Blah Blah Blah
I play original music (vocals, LH guitar, and
songwriting) and have since 1995. Around 2003 I really started honing my skills working on a unique voice and style, and I began to submit songs periodically to Songfight.org which helped quite a bit including sometimes brutally honest reviews and "pointers". In 2006, I tried to form a band, but as I learned, it is a difficult thing to do between scheduling, personalities, and goals, so I returned to the hermit style I had been accustomed to for so long... spending hours of time writing songs locked away in my office. Having written hundreds of tunes about a variety of subjects for a right of reasons, I have learned a lot about myself and the world around me, and of course, it continues, always evolving. Eventually, I began to work with others through online collaborations, and have gotten to experiment with several different styles of music which was a lot of fun!
In November of 2007, I performed publicly for the first time in nine years, and it felt really good! Since then, I have played at the Yellow House open mic
several times. I've gotten a very warm reception which doesn't hurt my ego at
all. ;) At the end May, I played two sets at Kelly's party (if you know,
you know, if you don't, sucks to be you). I think I'll be playing during
'60s Night at the Yellow House at the end of July. I'll post a blog or
something when it's signed and sealed.
Currently, I am looking to form a band. I'm interested in a variety of styles, but feel I am best suited for something either hard rock, blues, industrial, Southern rock, or indie rock both vocally and lyrically,
but would be interested in other styles. I can play rhythm guitar, so at least need a bass player and drummer. Send me a message if you are interested in forming a group that performs/records mostly original material and are ready to make some rockin' music whatever the style!
