So many bands separate for that ubiquitous reason “artistic differences.” There are always stories in the media about how the front man or woman is getting all the attention and the rest of the band feels slighted. N’Sync, Destiny’s Child, No Doubt; are all classic textbook cases that have been publicized in the media in the past couple of years. phi:NITE hopes to beat that trend with their attitude of cooperation, team work and sacrifice. Unlike a lot of new bands, they have not undergone numerous name, style and member changes. They have remained true to their roots and original form.
When songwriter Chase Thorne met chilean vocalist Popy, a partnership based on love of quirky music and soulful lyrics blossomed. Soon after, they brought in a longtime friend and engineer Christopher Heinrich to embark on a year long journey of engineering experiments and networking with a little production sprinkled in. Their drummer, Matt Heinrich, heard their early recordings from his cousin Chris and decided to join their ensemble, bringing in two of his friends to complete the band. New members Adam Rose and Dave Shafe round out the band’s roster that they currently perform with to this day.
With their band complete, they routinely crank out deep lyrics echoing of a philosophy based on the human plight. Popy’s illuminating voice is the perfect accompaniment to the thick and often haunting musical background. The lyrics combined with the instrumental layers, together form an unforgettable blend of music that is stylish and cutting-edge.
Even though they are an all-male band with a woman on vocals, they don’t want to be labeled as a chick fronted rock band. They want to be recognized for their collaborative efforts to make their music recognizable but unique. All the members in phi:NITE agree that being honest should never be a reason for an altercation when discussing the band’s music. Artistic differences? How about artistically different; that’s what phi:NITE is striving for and is well on their way to achieving. phi:NITE is emerging as one of Kansas City’s freshest new bands.
