All music heard above was written and recorded in the Phoenix House Music Studios.
Phoenix House has a mission—and a tradition spanning more than forty years—of leading individuals, families and communities from disrupted to productive lives. With 150 programs in ten states, we serve more than 7,000 men, women and adolescents each day, safeguarding youth, strengthening families, and enabling those trapped in dependency to confront addiction and to achieve and sustain recovery.
It’s hardly surprising to find clients who want to make music and want to learn how to express themselves in song. We’re learning that music therapy shows promise as a complimentary therapy for addiction treatment. Although there are not yet evidence-based studies of this relatively new practice, addicts in recovery are encouraged to make music, as a way of discovering multiple ways to express all forms of emotion. We see the music program as having therapeutic value. But it is also a prime means of engaging clients in the treatment process and making them part of a community enterprise, encouraging them to do what most of them already want to do.
The music program operates out of our recording studios in the Lake View Terrace and Yorktown Academies, both of which were generously donated by Kara Dioguardi. With the encouragement and help of our dedicated Music Directors, our students have been writing and recording their own compositions over the last year, resulting in a large catalog of original songs. Having co-written songs with our students and seeing the impact of music first-hand, Kara recently donated a third recording studio to our Austin Academy in Texas, which is currently under construction.
With such momentum and excitement surrounding our studios, we felt compelled to share our clients’ music on our own Phoenix House CD. To find our writers and performers, we conducted a search for musical talent among both adolescent and adult clients in our facilities across the nation. We secured close to 100 submissions, including 25 original compositions. Our clients displayed talent across many genres including hip-hop, hard rock, gospel, spoken word, acoustic and punk. Every region participated, some organized music nights, others staged their own “American Idol” talent shows and some clients simply gathered together and performed for each other, playing and singing their own compositions.
With that, we're currently working on our first Phoenix House CD and cannot wait to share the musical accomplishments of our clients!
