The Phoenix Improv Festival is an anual event that brings improvisors from around the country to the Valley of the Sun. Performers from Chicago, Detroit, LA, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Phoenix come together to practice and celebrate this modern theatrical artform. The festival began in 2002 with only three local troupes performing in a small theater on a Saturday afternoon. In the years that have followed, this event has grown to fill many days and nights, offering Phoenix a unique artistic and educational opportunity.
The festival is presented by The Phoenix Improv Alliance, a devision of CareFree Write Productions. Members of the Alliance include performers from various local troupes, including but not limited to Apollo 12, Galapagos, The Remainders, and The Originals.
About me: PIF is Phoenix's annual improvisation festival, presenting and celebrating the art of improvisation from around the country and the world.
We will begin planning PIF 2008 soon. Watch this space for details.
Who I'd like to meet: The 7th Annual Phoenix Improv Festival is coming April 4th, 5th & 6th, 2008.
The Phoenix Improv Festival returns to downtown Phoenix this April with the support of the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture. We’re proud to announce that our new home will be in the Herberger Theater in downtown Phoenix. We look forward to hosting our visitors from around North America in one of the finest venues in Arizona. The Festival will feature mainstage performances at the Herberger on Friday and Saturday nights.
2008 is an exciting time for improv in Phoenix. Several new improv theatres have sprung up around The Valley while other groups have been representing Arizona all around the country. It will be great to have them all back home and under one roof. We’re very proud of The Arizona improv scene. This year’s festival promises to have Arizona’s best performances all weekend long.
But that doesn’t mean groups from cities all around America won’t be coming to Phoenix in April. Last year brought us fantastic shows from Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, Salt Lake City and Seattle - plus a few surprises. We look forward to announcing some great shows in the months to come. The Phoenix Improv Festival also has an open submission policy, so if you’d like to submit your troupe for consideration, we’d love to hear from you.
Every year, Phoenix is home to fantastic new shows. Last year’s festival took improv in new directions. The Phoenix Neutrino Project filmed an unscripted film in real time. Chicago’s Switchboard and Phoenix’s own The Remainders brought their own brands of musical theatre and The L.A. based Underbelly brought their own rock show with them. 2008 should be no different, brining a new wave of conventional and unconventional improv to the stage.
And let’s not forget the comedy. Some of the funniest performers around the globe have graced us from the halls of The Second City, I.O., The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and just about everywhere else. Regular attendees of the festival might recognize some of the faces on NBC’s The Office or 30 Rock from their performances on the PIF stage. And of course, this year will see the return of the popular Arizona Showcase, featuring performances from all corners of the state. This is your chance to see some of the state’s best performers all day Sunday.
Want to bring your school or drama club to the Festival? Give us a call. There are plenty of opportunities to interact and learn from the full time actors. Plenty of workshops will be available for actors and the public. If you’ve ever wanted to get a start in comedy, here’s your chance.
There’s truly something for everyone at this year’s festival. Every show is unique, and every show will happen only once. Then it’s gone. Looking for the show that’s best for you? Call the box office any time to find the best show for you and your guests.
Thanks for stopping by. We’ll see you in April
