Born in Brighton, England and now hailing from Western Canada, Phontaine released 'aqui' in late 2001 under the name 'earball'. The appeal of the album reached all over the globe. "I just tried to make something familiar but fresh, something I'd like to listen to". Phontaine doesn't take a conventional approach to creating music; " I don't listen to music as most people do, I've always absorbed tones and timbres before notes and arrangement. I blend instruments, ambience and sounds and maintain the sonic quality of their era. I hope this brings a sense of nostalgia to the listener."
"It's electronic music for sure, but less abrasive than alot
of the stuff out there, I want it to sound as warm and authentic as possible, like warm 70's electronic music but with some new modern tones mixed in."
After the indie success of 'aqui', Phontaine had songs released on the compilations 'Blue Light One' (Upstairs Recordings/Nettwerk) and 'Global Groove'(Sugo Music) alongside Thievery Corporation.
The self-titled cd 'phontaine'(brighton sound recordings/Position) is his latest release. " I worked with some amazing musicians on this album, Nadia Clark (vocals) Ben Karcz and Chris Ledrew (Percussion) and Rob Johnson (stand-up bass). Without them this disc would not have such great 'humonic' feel. I also did alot of field recordings when traveling that I mixed in to certain tracks, it can add
an amazing depth to a song.
His tracks can also be heard on film and T.V (Sacred Planet IMAX,Las Vegas, Tru Calling, The O.C).
Phontaine, you are definitely my favourite Down-Tempo producer in Canada. Your sound definitely inspires me to keep on my production toes. Thanks for sharing the info about your Kit. Can't wait for your next release!!!
I heard your song on Crash and seriously searched Google for it for like 6 hours because it didn't say who it was in the credits. I finally ended up e-mailing Mark Isham to find out. I did however find a Crash forum where people were asking who you were. I would have told them but I didn't want to register, but here's the website if you want to...
Just thought I'd come back, thank you for the add and see if you'd have any interest in reading my "self-help" blog. This summer I've lost my grand-mother, my first love, I broke my leg and fell into a lot of debt... I've had to pull myself back together and have done so by reading lots of books... all of which are mentioned in the blog.
If you're a blogger or reader, check my official site http://www.christienpaul.com (designed it myself)
