  • Bio

Scandinavian/British jazz trio Phronesis have the ability to excite, inspire and move people in a way that few bands are able to do. Led by Danish double-bassist Jasper Høiby, their charismatic live performances have prompted Jon Newey (Editor of Jazzwise Magazine) to describe them as 'the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST'. In 2010 Phronesis captured the hearts and minds of British audiences and developed a fierce reputation as one of the most formidable trios in the UK. They were nominated for 'Best Jazz Ensemble' in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in April, featured on the front cover of Jazzwise Magazine in August, and nominated for 'Best Jazz Act' at the prestigious 2010 MOBO Awards in October. 2010 also saw the trio gain increasing attention in Europe, with acclaimed performances at the Banlieues Bleues Festival in Paris, and the Copenhagen and North Sea Jazz Festivals in addition to the Brecon, Glasgow and London Jazz Festivals in the UK. Their third album 'Alive' (Edition Records), featuring guest drummer Mark Guiliana (Avishai Cohen/Meshell Ndegeocello), was released in July to great critical acclaim and chosen as 'Jazz Album of the Year' 2010 by Jazzwise and MOJO Magazines, not only confirming their reputation, but looking set to escalate them to the forefront of the European contemporary jazz scene. Copenhagen-born, London-based, bassist Jasper Høiby created Phronesis in 2005, following his graduation from the Royal Academy of Music in London. Phronesis' debut album Organic Warfare was released in November 2007 on Loop Records, and charted in the US iTunes 'top 100 selling albums' for two months following its release. Their hotly anticipated second album Green Delay was released in June 2009, receiving critical acclaim from The Guardian, Jazzwise (who voted it as one of their top ten albums of 2009) and The Times, and journalist Chris Parker described it as 'a compulsively listenable, often downright haunting album'. 'ALIVE' (Edition Records 2010) .... "Alive sounds like one of the hot UK jazz-album contenders of 2010" ..GUARDIAN ****.. .... "Alive is about as exciting as it can get without actually seeing this band live and in the flesh" ..JAZZWISE ****.. .... "The sort of album that should get bigger jazz names quaking in their boots." ..BASS GUITAR MAGAZINE.. .... "This scorching live set fizzes with a post-EST/Avishai Cohen-style energy, replete with sunny Mediterranean Brazilian flourishes and depth-charge basslines.".. TIME OUT ****.. .... "a spirited and dramatic three-way musical conversation"... THE YORK PRESS.. .... ..PHRONESIS.. .... "Look out for Phronesis - they might change your life!" ..SEAN RAFFERTY ('IN TUNE' BBC RADIO 3).. .... "The most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST" ..JON NEWEY (EDITOR JAZZWISE).. .... "...the most electrifying experience to be had in British jazz." ..THE TELEGRAPH.. .... "Anyone who doubts there's a UK jazz scene worth taking note of should listen to Phronesis, who are proof positive that we have bands that are worthy of jazz's premier league right on our doorstep." ..BASS GUITAR MAGAZINE.. .... "I know I'm going to keep listening." ..AVISHAI COHEN (BASSIST/COMPOSER).. .... "A frenetic grooving, great young band with bags of confidence.." ..TIME OUT.. .... www.editionrecords.com | info@editionrecords.com ............

I so much enjoyed your Montreal show!!!!! I feel really fortunate to have stopped at that stage. I was sitting with my friend, so we didn't always see you guys on stage, we only listened, and hey did I had to pinch me once in a while to tell myself, it's only a trio. for me it was Bass vs drums, with a sweet piano doing the clue. and yes, I  when I finally got up to see who's playing (and to take some photos) I was really surprised that the drummer wasn't red and furry. The beaten-up bass was no surprise.
Thank you for the great, great, GREAT show and keep on playing guys, keep on playing!!!!
