Steve Kemble (Drums, percussion, vocals)
From Austin, recently transplanted to Asheville from “half a mile from Tucson”.
Steve has performed and recorded in many diverse genres including rock, blues, jazz, funk, country, salsa, reggae, ska, soca, soukous and zydeco, blending these sensibilities to help create music that is exquisitely alive in the moment!
When not playing music, Steve likes to play in the dirt, teaching natural building.

It’s been over forty years since the Grateful Dead began the long strange trip that generations have since embraced and enjoyed. Traditions born of trust, sharing, kindness and good will, formed a critical mass of optimism and musical joy. Sharing the music as well as crafts and art became a part of the community scene. These traditions eventually found there way into many concerts and festivals.
The Garage is offering an experiment appropriate for Asheville, by presenting quintessential Grateful Dead-centric music and a space for vendors and craftspeople to share their wares. Asheville’s own magical Grateful Dead interpreters, Phuncle Sam will be steering the musical boat.

SINCE their formation in 2004, Asheville, NC based, Phuncle Sam has been firmly rooted in musical exploration, Asheville's own Improv~ Americana, Dead~Centric "jam band". Over five years of intense jamming and rehearsing finds Phuncle Sam with an ever-expanding body of original music. The band will also serve up quintessential interpretations of Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead and many others.

Known to play concert/ parties that last all night, Asheville "after~show" shows for Ratdog, Moe, Widespread Panic and Darkstar Orchestra fans.

The band has played local venues as the Westville Pub, Stella Blue, the Emerald Lounge and The Town Pump in Black Mountain and festival venues such as The Harvest Bash in Mars Hill and The Pig Pull at Deerfields.

Phuncle Sam has also worked with Bonfires For Peace playing in Asheville’s Pritchard park many times and also playing acoustic shows in smaller venues such as Malliprop’s bookstore and Rosetta’s Kitchen also for the Traveling Bonfires.

Phuncle Sam’s real testing grounds were at Bearly Edible (now Ophelia’s).
Frankly, we lost track of how many gigs we played there, maybe close to twenty?

In the summer of 2006, Phuncle Sam did a short tour hitting Nebraska and Colorado, playing at Quixote's in Denver and headlining the Summerfest festival in Alamosa among other appearances.

The band has also collaborated many times with the gifted singer and guitarist, Jaimee Tomas.

Opened for the Mantras a couple of times in July. What a great pleasure! These folks are real creative and all monster players. There are comparisons perhaps, but they are steadily carving out thier own sound. Very intense and rewarding

Phuncle Sam is jammin’, experimenting

Asheville-based rock ‘n’ roll jam band Phuncle Sam has become synonymous with an all-night party. Starting out as a tribute to The Grateful Dead, The Band and other pioneers of that genre, the seven-piece Phuncle Sam has turned a new chapter, composing its own originals and carving out a new sound.
The band pays a visit to Black Mountain on Aug. 9, doing a 9:30p.m. show at the Town Pump. We recently talked with guitarist and vocalist James “Stymie” Collins.
Question: Who makes up Phuncle Sam?
Answer: (In addition to Collins the band features) Bill Evans on guitar and vocals, Dan Joffe on bass guitar and vocals, David Mulder on piano, keyboards, and vocals, John “Geo” Wyatt on drums and vocals, and Ned McGuinn on percussion. We’ve had a couple of lineup changes over the years, but the core has been the same.
(The band has also collaborated a good bit with Asheville rocker Jaimee Tomas, who lends a hand on vocals from time to time).
Q: How would you describe what you do?
A: We’re a rock ‘n’ roll jam band. We’re all influenced by the Grateful Dead. We’re a bunch of Deadheads, but at the same time we aren’t defined by that. We’re a band that doesn’t mind playing covers. In fact we have a lot of fun doing them. But at the same time we’re growing musically, doing more of our own original material.
Q: Describe Phuncle Sam’s songwriting process.
A: It’s unique in that some songs that we’ve written, each member has collaborated on. On the other hand, we’ve all been in different (musical) projects before and have each brought different songs that we had written prior to being in this project together.
Q: Describe your ideal gig.
A: Well, there’s nothing finer than having people enjoy your music. And the type of music that we play really opens up the floor for people to dance and have a good time. We hit so many different genres of music in one night, it really enables the fun.
Q: What can music lovers expect from a Phuncle Sam show?
A: We have this huge experimental factor going on. As a jam band, we take chances, and we’re not afraid to try new things. We’re definitely a live band, and we feed off the energy of the crowd. You’re just not going to get the same show every night.

To Release isn't to forget, not to think about, or ignore. It doesn't leave feelings of anger, jealousy, or regret. It's not about pride and it's not obsessing or dwelling on the past. It's not about giving in or giving up. To let go is to cherish the memories, but to overcome and move on. Letting go is learning and experiencing and growing. To release is to be thankful for the experiences that made you laugh, made you cry, and made you grow. It's about all that you have, all that you had, and all that you will soon gain. Letting go is releasing and having the courage to accept change, and the strength to keep moving. It is realizing that the heart can sometimes be the most potent remedy. To let go is to open a door, and to clear a path and set yourself free---
