Pianoplayer Paul's Interests
|
| General | "serious" music (particularly of 20th & 21st centuries, avant-garde, experimental) and jazz - improvising, performing, composing, listening, attending concerts and music festivals; research in fluency disorders; American history, liberal political activism; Judaism (I draw from the ideas and practices of all branches across the spectrum, with my favorite being Jewish Renewal), Middle Eastern history, "Peace Zionism", "tikkun olam" [correction of the world]; mathematical curiosities; astronomy; linguistics; exploring the beautiful nature in this magnificent country of Norway; long walks in rural environments; being with small children; American baseball (particularly, of course, the Boston Red Sox), and baseball history; genealogy; Toastmasters (public speaking organization); political and social satire, and off-the-wall humor; writing on many subjects; fact checking and proofreading upon request from friends (or when paid); ultra-mega-spicy foods of unearthly dimensions | | Music | My Top Ten all-time favorite composers: Beethoven, Stravinsky, Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Schoenberg, Schubert, Ives, Mahler, Debussy. Other favorites (in alphabetical order): Babbitt, Bartok, Berg, Berio, Bloch, Boulez, Cage, Carter, Chopin, Copland, Crumb, Feldman, Foss, Handel, Haydn, Ligeti, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Reich, Rzewski, Schumann, Sessions, Shapey, Stockhausen, Varèse, Webern. | | Movies | I don't often attend films; however, I'm particularly drawn to films that are rooted in historic events and/or offer unique insights into the particular problems of our times (personal, national, global). | | Television | I'm not much of a TV fan, but for what it's worth, these are my all-time favorites: Comedy - "All in the Family" (from 1970's), "The Honeymooners" (from 1950's), "Keeping Up Appearances" (BBC, 1990's); Drama - "Twilight Zone" (from 1960's), "Star Trek Next Generation" (1980's-1990's), "Alfred Hitchcock" (from 1950's). Game show - "The Weakest Link" (BBC, 2000's). | | Books | nonfiction books in a diversity of subjects, including music history (particularly contemporary, avant-garde, and experimental music; American music; Jewish music); American history, left-wing politics; Judaism (from a variety of perspectives), Jewish history, detailed proposals for Middle Eastern peace (applying principles of "tikkun olam" and "Peace Zionism"); baseball history; humorous books of social and political satire; annual almanacs of information and data on many subjects | | Heroes | In general, I disapprove of "hero worship", as this often excessively inflates the perceived importance of certain people, while detracting from the idea that we are all unique individuals of equal intrinsic merit, and therefore need to follow our own yearnings, desires, and goals to realize our personal potential - independent of what someone else may have accomplished on their own path of life.
However, that being said, I particularly admire those people who have helped to make a significant positive difference in the world and society in which we live. |

Pianoplayer Paul's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm a pianist-composer who moved to Norway nine years ago from Massachusetts, for the purpose of love and marriage.
As a pianist, I've performed in many nightclubs and restaurants in Massachusetts, in concerts of contemporary music and jazz in Chicago, and for special events in Bergen, Norway.
The Norwegian verb "to play" [music] is "å spille", and a wide diversity of music frequently spills out of my fingers when they hit the ivories - whether I'm improvising, following a jazz tune chart, interpreting a work in experimental notation, or following a traditionally detailed score.
As a composer, my works in recent decades have been primarily in the contemporary, avant-garde, and experimental areas, as well as in jazz. Frequently I make use of original notational systems, such as verbal directions and graphs. My music often draws upon diverse influences, including minimalism, aleatoric techniques, post-serial structures, jazz rhythms, fusions of disparate harmonic systems, and improvisatory freedoms. And yet there is a love of Tradition that keeps coming back to haunt me, which is constantly spiced by the jazz in my soul.
But I've also been in other fields as well:
Besides a near-doctorate in music, I also have a master's education in speech-language pathology, and have experience in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of speech and language disorders. My interests in this area stem from the challenges of being a Person Who Stutters, and I closely follow developments in the research and clinical treatment of fluency disorders. I have long been actively involved with stuttering organizations in the United States and Norway.
Another field of study is mathematics, in particular mathematical logic and number theory.
I also have strong interests in history, left-wing politics, and Judaism - all areas of long-time self-education.
Currently I'm employed as "helgeforelder" ("weekend parent" for children with special needs, being part of the extensive Norwegian social welfare system).
I'm married with three adult stepchildren, a daughter-in-law, a foster daughter, and three grandchildren. Considering that in 2000 I was a 46-year-old bachelor with none of these, I would say that this is pretty fast work indeed!

Who I'd like to meet:
1) musicians with a pioneering adventurous spirit;
2) fans of "serious" (i.e., "classical" or "art") music - in particular contemporary, avant-garde, and experimental music; and also fans of jazz;
3) persons with an interest in liberal political activism, in the ancient Jewish principle of "tikkun olam" ["correction of the world"];
4) anyone with a special interest in the disorder of stuttering, including of course others of the "Tribe of the Tangled Tongue" (and most especially, people who have known me from the many stuttering conventions, conferences, support groups, and therapy groups I've been involved with);
5) old friends who knew me while growing up in the Tatnuck area of Worcester, Mass. (1950's-1970's - including May St. School, Beth Israel Hebrew School, Chandler Jr. High, Doherty High School); at Clark University (1970's), at the International House of Chicago (where I was Concert Director) and University of Chicago Music Dept. (1970's-1980's), in the Emerson College Communication Disorders grad program (1980's-1990's), at Central Toastmasters of Worcester, Mass. (1990's), and in Norwegian language classes for immigrants at the Bergen Nygård Skole and University of Bergen (2000's);
6) Jewish people in Norway (a rare breed), and in particular from the Bergen area (an especially rare breed - is anyone out there interested in helping to establish a Jewish congregation in the Bergen area, or sharing in Jewish holiday observances or Erev Shabbat meals?);
7) anyone interested in helping to establish a Toastmasters [public speaking organization] chapter in the Bergen, Norway area - which would be the first in western Norway;
8) anyone who thinks they may be a long-lost relative of mine (I have a fascination for genealogy);
9) anyone who may have a generous job offer for me, based on anything that appears in this profile (for example, nightclub/restaurant piano work in the Bergen area; or fact research online); 10) anyone at all on the island of Sotra (Norway) interested in friendship and English-language conversation; and
11) generally, anyone who is intelligent, educated (either formally or through self-study), compassionate, creative, and deeply caring about people and the world
