Described by critics as “masterful” and “evocative,” flutist Christine Erlander Beard is constantly in demand as a soloist, chamber artist, and clinician. Quickly achieving international recognition as a performer and advocate for the piccolo, she has performed extensively across the U.S. and abroad, including Austria, Ireland, England, France, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, and Russia. She has performed at four of the previous six conventions of the National Flute Association (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007), and in 2006 was invited to be the featured piccolo soloist at the International Vintage Brass Band Festival. Recent activities include appearing as a guest artist at the Iowa Flute Festival (March 2009); conducting piccolo clinics at the British Flute Society International Convention in Manchester, England (August 2008); chamber performances at the College Music Society Super-Regional Conference at Illinois State University (March 2008) and at the at MENC/NACWPI National Convention in Milwaukee, WI (April 2008); and serving as the featured guest artist at the St. Louis Flute Society Flute Festival (April 2008). Upcoming engagements include hosting the 2nd International Piccolo Symposium (June 2009) and giving the NFA premiere of Matt Smith's "Sonata No. 2 for piccolo and piano" at the 2009 National Flute Association Convention in New York City.
In addition to her active performance schedule, Christine is the Roy Seaman Piccolo Artist for Gemstone Musical Instruments and in that role has presented piccolo clinics and lecture-recitals at state music conferences and flute festivals across the U.S., including AL, AR, CA, CO, MN, NE, NM, NY, SC, TN, TX, VT, and D.C. In 2006, she was invited to lecture on the evolution of the solo piccolo in the 19th c. at the International Wind Music History Symposium and presented the same lecture at the American Musical Instrument Society International Conference at Yale University in June 2007. Her pedagogical articles and columns have been published in Flute Talk, the Flutist Quarterly, Flutewise, and The Instrumentalist, and her arrangement of Eugene Damare's “Le Roitelet” ("The Wren Polka") for solo piccolo and band has enjoyed performances across the U.S. and Europe.
Dr. Beard earned her MM and DMA in flute performance from The University of Texas at Austin (1998, 2003). She joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2002 where she teaches applied flute, chamber music, and serves as Coordinator of Woodwind Studies. In 2003, she co-founded the Nebraska Flute Club and continues to serve on its Board of Directors, and also established the Heartland Community Flute Choir in Omaha which has since been selected to perform at two NMEA conferences and the 2008 NFA Convention in Kansas City. In her spare time, she serves as the webmaster for PiccoloHQ.com, enjoys traveling and shopping, and spends as much time as possible with her husband, Michael. Her debut CD, Souvenirs: 21st Century Works for Piccolo is scheduled to be released in 2009. For more info, visit www.piccoloHQ.com
