"Last summer at the Madison Street Fair, Pickwick played an indoor set to a packed house. When the last chord rang out and the audience finished their applause, a hushed silence came over the crowd. I looked around and saw a handful of dropped jaws and eyes fixed blankly toward the stage as if recently enraptured by some new tormenting love. It almost felt like a silent encore. In the music world, bands don’t really get that kind of a hint, so they packed up their gear and we slowly regained attention to real life and moved on to the next band of the night. As far as the factual rhythms of a music write-up, Pickwick is a five piece ambient/folk/rock band from Seattle. They interwork country sensibilities, up to four part harmonies, ambient noisy loops and soulful melodies all into their unique but quite palatable sound. Not to mention, they somehow do what bands can seldom do: be proficient and flawless enough together, to draw people into the actual subtle emotion of the lyrics and sounds they are displaying. They also usually have really well complimenting plaid snap shirts and style points are big points in my book.” -From downtown Spokane zine Crunkroost
When I last wrote about oil on Saturday, Dec 20, 2008, I was lucky enough to precisely pick the bottom of the West Texas Intermediate. (According to DOE data, Texas light sweet crude hit its daily five year low of $30.28 the following Tuesday.) Back then, an ounce of gold would buy you 21.3 barrels of oil, over 25% more than the 25 year average of 16.8 barrels. Currently, we are at 13.5 barrels of oil per ounce, which is almost 20% less than average. Given the deflationary economic environment and newly overheated stock market, I would rather bet on oil taking a tumble than gold prices catching up. Especially because other commodity prices confirm this line of thinking.
