Pierre is a native of the beautiful island of Haiti. At the age of
twelve, he learned how to play the guitar. The first type of music he
ever played was compas, which is the most popular dance music in his
country. As a Christian, he was very involved in playing for his
church. He even put together his own gospel group, which was a great
success! His love for jazz began at the age of eighteen.
The beginning
of his career started one Sunday afternoon, while Pierre was listening
to his favorite radio station, they happened to play a George Benson
tune. It was the first time he ever heard a guitar sound like that!
Immediately he said to himself, “This is what I want to play!” So he
wrote to his friends and family who lived in the U.S., asking them to
send him a few tapes of George Benson. He practiced every day since
then, and at the age of twenty-seven he moved to the United States. A
couple years later, he decided to attend Florida Atlantic University to
study jazz. He got married to his wife, Marleine, and they recently had
a beautiful baby girl named Christina.
Pierre believes that jazz is the biggest expression of the heart, because a jazz tune can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the mood of the
performer, the interaction between the musicians, and sometimes the
audience. He thinks that a catchy melody and good lyrics are the key to
making a great song. His biggest influences are George Benson, Pat
Matino, and West. He also enjoys listening to Miles Davis, John
Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock. Letting people know about his music is
his biggest motivation. Pierre says, “God gave me a gift, people like
it, for me this is a good source of motivation.”
