Pierre-Yves Prothais débute à partir de 8 ans par le tambour, puis il étudie la batterie et les percussions classiques.
Apres un long séjour au Niger en 1993-94, il devient musicien professionnel, développant différentes expériences avec plusieurs artistes dans le domaine de la chanson, les musiques traditionnelles, le jazz...
Percussionniste, batteur, vocaliste, Pierre-Yves Prothais est musicien de scène, compositeur sur images et créateur de bandes sonores pour des spectacles. Inspiré par de nombreuses musiques dont celles d'Afrique et d’Orient, Pierre-Yves utilise une palette sonore riche, composée de nombreuses percussions, de xylophones et d'instruments qu'il invente et conçoit lui même.
Actuellement, ses sujets préférés sont les musiques originales avec le trio Matzik, le Quartet d'Yvan Knorst, le Propos écologique avec la conteuse Marie Chiff’Mine sur le spectacle « La Terre allant vers... », la Composition sur image avec Ollivier Leroy sur du Ciné concert jeune public : Ciné Baby / Aladin / Ciné concert La Petite Taupe, l’Afrique avec Boubacar Souleymane artiste du Mali et du Niger, et, Makida Palabre, création 2003 dont il est l'initiateur. Ce dernier projet est né de la réunion de musiciens bretons et de musiciens nigériens issus des Mamar Kassey. Makida Palabre, groupe de huit musiciens se produit depuis 2003 au Afrique et en Europe (Festival Les Tombées de la Nuit 2004, La Harpe en Jazz 2005, Théâtre de Redon, Centre Culturel de Niamey, de Zinder (Niger)…).
Auparavant, il a également jouer avec le groupe Ôbrée Alie, la fanfare Sergent Pépère, et des artistes de la Bretagne tels que Gérard Delahaye et Soïg Sibéril.
